The walk home is silent until we reach Greek Row.

“Uhm, you probably don’t want to, but…” Brock’s words trail off like he isn’t sure how to approach the subject. “If we are going to sell this boyfriend/girlfriend thing, you need to come to the frat party Saturday night.”

My footsteps falter causing Brock to react quickly to stop me from faceplanting on the sidewalk.

“What?” My words are too loud in the night air, but thankfully, there aren’t a lot of people around to draw attention.

Keeping his arm around me, Brock gets us moving again.

“The fraternity that I live in, we have a party every Saturday night. You need to be there if we are going to sell this.” Brock’s words run through my head like a pinball bouncing around the board. His tone is brisk, as if my possible denial is not an option.

“I am not a party person, Brock. The wildest it gets for me is a movie with my roommates and a couple of drinks.”

“Bring them.”

My head whips in Brock’s direction so fast my neck cracks. Eyes widening in shock at his bland, matter-of-fact statement. My gaze roams over his face, getting nothing from his expression.

“You want me to bring Kennedy and the guys to a frat party?” my tone is skeptical.

“If it will make you feel more comfortable, yes,” Brock says with a shrug as if it’s no big deal.

“Let me talk to them,” my tone is one of resignation, knowing that he is right but not ready to admit it verbally. “If they agree to come with me, then yes, we will stop in for a while.”

Brock's shoulders sag in relief at my response.

Reaching my building, my body stiffens at the sight of my sister. As we come to a stop, Brock slips his hand into mine, lacing our fingers together. Similar to how I found Brock this morning, Karoline is leaning against the brick wall.

“It’s about fucking time,” she says.

“Karoline,” I say her name with an exasperated sigh. “Why are you here?”

“Why does everyone think that I have an ulterior motive to coming to see you?” she says innocently, putting a hand on her chest as she speaks.

Her offended look is easy to see through.

“Because you usually do,” I retort.

“You didn’t come home for the holidays. Mom has been concerned, so I volunteered to come and check on you. It would be nice to spend some time with you.” The entire time Karoline is speaking, her gaze roams over Brock’s body.

“Karoline, I am not sure what you expected to find when you made the trip down here,” Brock gives my hand a gentle squeeze. Drawing strength from him, my voice gets a little more confident. “I have tutoring and classes. Outside of that, my freetime is spent studying. I am here to get an education and better myself. Not to mention, I called Mom almost a week ago.”

“Sure it is,” Karoline snarks with a scoff, looking pointedly at Brock.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“With nothing better to do, I spent the day checking up on you. That Danica girl and her friends were quite talkative. In fact, up until this morning, no one on campus knew that the two of you were dating,” she states as if she has caught me in the middle of something. Her eyes bounce between Brock and me.

She continues, not giving either of us a chance to reply. “Also, he is one of the biggest partiers on campus. So, it is difficult to believe that you are as studious as you make it sound.” Waving her finger between the two of us, “This isn’t real. All of the people that I have spoken to today know him,” Karoline pauses, pointing to Brock, never taking her eyes off of me. “The few who know your name only know you by association to those roommates of yours. Every single one of them were shocked when I said that you are a couple.”

Crossing her arms over her chest, my words are at a loss. Brock, however, is the first to act. Spinning me around and wrapping his arms around me, he moves his face closer to mine. The world seems to slow down as his lips hover over mine. Time speeds back up again, when the feel of his soft lips pressed against mine has me wrapping my arms around his neck. His tongue presses against my lips, requesting entry. My lips part, and our tongues duel.

What should have been an awkward first kiss quickly turns heated, bordering on out of control. Karoline’s laughter and slow clap bring us out of the lustful haze, forcing us to break apart.

“Good for you, but I am still not buying it,” Karoline says before turning away from us. Calling over her shoulder to me,dread pools in my stomach. “See you tomorrow, little sister. I can’t wait for the party tomorrow night.”

Thankful to still be wrapped up in Brock’s arms, my body sags as he supports my weight.

“Well, I guess that answers that. What time does this party start?” I state blandly, already dreading tomorrow night.
