Yes, I am trying to caffeinate myself.

Her response makes me laugh. Kassidy isn’t a high-maintenance girl, but she can’t live without coffee and wine.

The door opens, and the volume of conversation in the hall has me turning toward it. Zanko comes in, more awake than when he left, a little bounce in his step.

“What has you all chipper?” I ask.

“Domingo and Seiver got one of the freshmen,” he says with a slight chuckle.

The team has a small hazing ritual. For the most part, it’s harmless. When we hit the road, we make the newbies on the team carry our luggage and play gofer while on the road. A smile spreads across my face as I step toward the door.

Sticking my head into the hallway through the open door, my head moves left and right, trying to find my victim. Zanko’s laugh from behind me lets me know he has an idea of what I am doing. Spotting one of the other guys, I call out. “Arran, I need a rookie,”

A smile crosses the center fielder’s face, and his only response is to give me a thumbs up as he turns the corner.

Not long after, someone knocks softly on the door. Moving to answer, I get a stern look on my face before opening it.

“What!” I bark out as the kid before me curls in on himself at my tone.

“A…Ar-Arran said that…I-I should co-come here,” he stutters out.

Pointing to my bed, his eyes follow. He immediately grabs my bag and heads for the door.

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Zanko says, enjoying the kid’s trepidation too much.

The kid freezes mid-step, looking over his shoulder. Both Zanko and I stand with our arms crossed over our chests, staring expectantly. Zanko takes a step to the left, revealing his bag that our large forms were blocking from view. The kid’s face lights up in understanding, and he moves toward Zanko’s bed to pick up the bag. Neither of us moves, forcing the kid to turn sideways and squeeze between the two of us. It takes him a few minutes, but he manages to get the bag without bumping into us or touching us with the bag.

Deciding that his torment isn’t quite over, an idea forms as a smile crosses my face. Just before the kid reaches the open doorway, I speak. “When you have those dropped off at the bus, you need to go over to the Dionysus building in the Olympus Towers. Get Kassidy’s luggage and take it to the bus. I will let her know you are coming.”

The kid’s face pales a little, but he recovers quickly. He nods before taking off. It’s a bit of a hike from here to the field where the buses wait. The fact that he has to come back and get to the apartments and return will push him.

“That’s funny shit,” Zanko laughs, leaning against me to hold himself up as tears leak from his eyes.

Shrugging him off, I grab my phone again.

Me

Have your luggage ready.

Kassidy

Why?

Me

I have someone coming for it, so it can be loaded on the bus.

Kassidy

Okay.

Me

Have Callum meet him downstairs.
