It’s opening day in Padston, New York.

Kennedy, Gareth, Ashton, Callum, and Rodney all flew up with Kassidy for the game today.

Being the starting pitcher today has eyes focused on me for a multitude of reasons. Nervous energy has me pacing the dugout, waiting for opening ceremonies to start. The Predator mascot, some wolf-looking thing, is out on the field doing all kinds of antics, trying to excite the crowd.

“Adams,” Coach shouts, doing a chin lift toward the field. Grabbing my glove, I step out of the dugout, heading to the pitcher’s mound.

Going through the motions of warming up, it isn’t long before the mascot escorts Kassidy to the batter’s box. My hands sweat as he takes up position behind the plate, acting as the catcher. She readies herself with the bat he hands her, and I lob an easy pitch her way. She connects with the ball and starts to jog the bases. Since no one else is on the field, the ball rolls through the perfectly trimmed grass.

Kassidy quickly approaches home plate, and her steps falter as soon as she sees me, on bended knee. Her hands fly to hermouth, and I use the hand not holding the ring to urge her forward. She steps directly onto the plate, tears in her eyes.

“Kassidy, will you please do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

Oohs and awws sound through the crowd as soon as they realize what is happening.

“Yes,” she manages to whisper as her head bobs up and down incessantly.

With shaking hands, I remove the ring from the box, slipping it on her finger. Tossing the now empty box over my shoulder, I rise, wrapping her in a fierce hug, spinning us in a circle. The crowd is going crazy, cheering as if we just won the game.

I guess we have.

This semester didn’t suck after all.
