“I said I’ll think about it, Lily. Now go back to the cabin while I do.”

I spend the rest of the flight in silence, those behind me chattering until the moment the wheels hit the tarmac and we land somewhere in California, the desert sprawling out on all sides. We leave, people calling for cab service. I would probably never see everyone here again. As I pass Vaughn, heading for the steps to the ground, he hands me a card.

“Meet me here in one month. Same day, same time.”

I flip over the card. On the back is an address, a number, and a name. “The Vanguard Order?”

“I considered your offer. We’ll talk about it more then,” is all Vaughn says as he shuts the jet’s door behind me. I descend the stairs, unable to hold in the satisfied smile that plays on my lips as I realize the ending of the Echelon Society doesn’t mean the ending of playing for me.

Let the games begin.

Again.
