My mouth opens, but I’m not sure how to answer. I’m spared when another auburn-haired teenager appears behind Kitty in the hallway. If she weren’t a few inches taller, she could be Kitty’s twin.

The young lady places her hand on Kitty’s shoulder as she nudges past her into the kitchen.

“Kade,” She asks, slightly squinting at me. “Is this your girlfriend?” Her face breaks into an enormous grin, quite a contrast to the scowl immediately overtaking Gunner’s face.

“Don’t call me Kade,” He snaps. “And, no. She’s not my girlfriend.” Gunner turns his head, but not before I see the blush developing on his cheeks.

“I’m Goldie,” I say, offering my outstretched palm as I walk forward.

“I’m Kiki,” She smiles, grasping my hand as she meets me halfway. Her eyes move from my face down to my men’s t-shirt, sweatpants, and the same party heels I wore the night before. Kiki draws her eyebrows together and I suddenly feel self-conscious.

Gunner clears his throat, finally recovered. “She’s afriend,”He says pointedly. “She’s just staying here a few days.”

Kitty mirrors Gunner’s earlier scowl as she rolls her eyes. “Well, introduce us, then!”

I brace myself for Gunner to fire back, but he just waves his hand and rolls his eyes dejectedly.

“Goldie, this is Kitty,” Gunner grumbles. He lets out a sigh. “And this is Kiki. These are my sisters,” He grunts.

My eyes widen as they flit between Gunner and the teenage girls. His sisters,I can see it. It’s obvious, in fact. All three of them look so much alike. The same tousled auburn hair and stunning hazel eyes, quite the contrast to the giant hulk of a man and delicate teenage girls.

“And he loves us,” Kitty replies, her voice playful as she reaches to wrap her arm around Gunner’s shoulder.

I bite my tongue to mask my smile when she plants a kiss on Gunner’s cheek. Gunner makes a face but nestles Kitty underneath his thick arm and she leans against him. These girls aren’t afraid of their big brother at all. I can’t believe hownormalthey seem.

“So, are you coming to the cookout tonight?” Kiki asks me with a smile.

“Um,” I stammer, looking towards Gunner for an answer.

“She is,” Gunner says, staring into my eyes. “Everyone’s going to be there.”

A cookout with a bunch of bikers? My mind is racing, but I nod, as if I’d known the plan all along. I can’t exactly explain to these teenagers that their beloved brother is holding me hostage.

Once again, I notice Kiki’s eyes roaming over my outfit. She smiles kindly when she realizes that I’ve caught her staring. Kiki has the good manners to blush, but Kitty is staring at my clothes with an expression of disdain.

“Is that what you’re going to wear?” Kitty asks bluntly, zeroing in on my mismatched high heel shoes.

Gunner grimaces, and I almost chuckle.

I pat my thighs, looking down at the oversized sweatpants to hide my reaction.

“You know, I could really use some help with that,” I reply, looking up to smile at Kitty shyly.

Kitty’s sour expression is brightening and Kiki is already clapping her hands together in delight.

“We’ll find something for you to wear,” Kiki squeals and I grin as Gunner rolls his eyes.

The teen girls waste no time.

“Come on,” Kitty urges, threading her arm through mine. I’m swept along, down the narrow hallway to their shared bedroom.

Two white twin daybeds line opposite walls of the small room, each with their own white nightstand. The room is painted a pale green hue and there are floral curtains, bedspreads, and wallpaper. It’s so feminine that it is a strange juxtaposition to the decor of the rest of the compound.

“I’ll just be out here,” Gunner calls from out in the living room. “If anyone cares,” He adds in a grumble.

Kitty and Kiki don’t bother responding. They’ve flung open the folding doors of their shared closet to inspect its contents. Kitty is sorting through the hangers one by one when Kiki strokes her chin.

“Hmmm,” She murmurs, before looking over her shoulder. “What kind of look are you going for this evening?”
