Some of my brothers charge towards them. There’s gunfire and screaming, but I can’t turn back. I have to reach her.

“Goldie!” My voice doesn’t sound like my own. I wrap my arms around her and it seems to jolt her to her senses.

“Get inside!” I scream over the gunfire. “Run!”

A bullet whizzes past my head, close enough to singe my hair.

I shield Goldie with my body the best I can as we run towards the compound. We are close. Then closer. Just a few more steps.

It’s like my heart is outside of my body. When Goldie crosses the threshold of the door, I breathe a sigh of relief. Now, it’s time to get back to business.

I turn around, aim and fire. Aim and fire.

My brothers have blocked the gates behind them. They’re trapped inside, surrounded by Grim Riders.

We plan to take every single one of them out.

Within a few minutes, there’s few of them left standing, but I spot one straggler. He turns to run, and I can see the patch on the back of his leather jacket.

I shake my head in disgust. I should have known. Our fucking rivals, the Kings of Mayhem MC. They’ve been coming for us for years, but where did they get these weapons? Firepower like this could only come from one source.

I steady, aim, and fire. The man collapses to the ground in a heap.

That’s what you get,I think. We don’t allow for any survivors. We show no mercy. The Kings of Mayhem have met the Grim Riders. We’ve done our duty to escort them off of the face of earth.

I think that it’s all over, but then I hear the blast of gunfire.

There’s no time for me to react.

There’s hot pain searing through my side, and it seems like everything is happening in slow motion. I realize that I’ve been hit and I’m completely knocked off balance. I’m falling, but I can’t catch myself. I grip my hands at my wounded side.

I feel the wind whoosh through my hair before the back of my skull connects with concrete.

Then, everything goes black.

Chapter 15

Marigold

Once I’m back inside the relative safety of the compound, I’m not sure what to do.

The compound is a maze of twists and turning hallways. I can’t be sure that I could find my way to a different exit. Even then, I could walk into an even worse situation. A stray bullet or even more dangerous biker. The thought alone is enough to make me shiver, and when I glance down, I see my hands trembling.

What do I do? Where do I go?

I pace inside, a safe distance from the doorway. The rapid gunfire has slowed to a trickle, with just the occasional blast ripping through the air.

It has to be almost over,I think.

I summon my courage and tiptoe back to the heavy steel door. With trepidation, I drag the handle and it’s open just a crack. I stay back in the shadows as I peer through the opening.

Smoke is clearing and I can make out a crumpled figure lying in a heap on the pavement. My eyes squint, searching the darkness, and I gasp when I recognize the messy mop of windswept golden hair.

Zeke.

My heart pounds and I can hear it in my ears, beating like a drum. I don’t think, but my body reacts on autopilot.

Without a thought of my safety, I swing open the heavy metal door and run outside. I don’t hear the sounds of gunfire, but it wouldn’t stop me at this point. I have to get to him. I might be able to help.
