“You’re cute when you blush,” Rex grins. “But it’s true. The three of us share and share alike. And we would like to shareyou.”

When I glance over at Gunner, his face is neutral, but he nods slowly.

“Okay,” I mumble. “I’ll have to think about all that.”

Zeke reaches for my hand and gives it a squeeze.

“Whenever you’re ready,” He says, smiling. “But come inside with me,” He laughs, tugging at my hand.

I look back at Rex and Gunner, still standing next to their bikes.

“We’ll keep watch out here,” Rex calls. “Don’t worry.” He casually leans against his motorcycle.

“Let me guess,” Zeke says with a wink. His hand tugs me along to the entrance. “You’ve never been to one of these before?”

“Of course not!”

Zeke laughs, throwing back his head. “I’m sure it’s not as bad as you think.”

When the mirrored door swings open, loud music assaults my eardrums. My body seems to vibrate along with the thumping bass.

It’s dark and smoky. I see a stage with a shiny, silver pole and, before I can avert my eyes, a half-naked gyrating woman. I gasp, but there’s no way anyone can hear it over the music. Men sit along the bar lining the stage, tossing dollar bills in the dancer’s direction.

I turn my head down. I’m only looking at the floor, which is a black-and-white checkered tile. Zeke is leading me along, and when we stop, I bump into a barstool.

“I’m sure you remember Lulu,” Zeke says dryly, speaking directly into my ear. “She’s a bartender here.”

Zeke turns, waving his hand at a scantily clad woman behind the bar on the opposite end.

The blonde bartender squeals, placing her hands on her cheeks, before skittering over on her dangerously high heels.

“Zeke, honey!” Lulu says, stepping around the bar to envelop Zeke in her arms. “Are you all right?”

“Yes, Mom, I’m fine,” Zeke replies, his words muffled by a mouthful of Lulu’s teased blonde hair.

“Let me see,” Lulu demands, pulling away from him to prepare for inspection.

Zeke rolls his eyes but lifts his shirt obediently, revealing a bandage on the side of his chiseled, six-pack abdomen.

“Oh, honey. You need to rest and recover,” Lulu chides, rubbing Zeke’s arm.

I’m just watching, a spectator of this loving moment between mother and son. It makes me think about how much I’ve missed out on since my mom passed away when I was born. Loretta has never been a mother-figure to me, even though she married my father when I was a baby.

Suddenly, Lulu’s wrapping her arms around me.

“Goldie, sweetie!” She purrs, squeezing tight before patting me on the back. “I’m so glad you stopped by!” Lulu ends her embrace, but she’s still holding onto my elbows. Her blue eyes twinkle and her red lips twist into a small smile beneath her sculpted cheekbones.

I just smile, not knowing what to say. I see genuine warmth in Lulu’s eyes. Despite her clothing, despite her job, despiteeverything,Lulu seems like a wonderful person and a loving mother. Despite being a Grim Rider and all that comes with it, Zeke is a caring and dutiful son. They have a beautiful relationship, much different from the one I have with my own family.

Lulu leans in, speaking just loud enough for me to hear her over the music.

“You should know,” Lulu begins, checking that Zeke is out of earshot. “That my son is head over heels in love with you.”

My mouth gapes and my eyebrows bunch together.

“He’s had girlfriends, sure,” Lulu continues, waving one manicured hand. “But nothing like this. I’mserious,” She insists.

“Mom, what are you saying?” Zeke calls over the din.
