“All right. I’ll have one of those, please. Thank you.”

I turned to go.

“You never told meyourname.”

I turned back to Mr. Kenney. “It’s Toby.”

He nodded. “Thank you, Toby. I’ll be right here.”

“And I’ll be right back.”

I turned and walked to the bar, my heart beating a merry dance as my inner dialogue wentfuck, fuck, fuck.

I went up to Jacob at the bar and ordered a Sazerac for Mr. Kenney. Patrick came back, looking confused.

Huh.

“They didn’t ask for me. They didn’t know what you were talking about.”

“Oh, shit, I thought they needed you. My mistake,” I said, with my best approach at a sympathetic expression. “I’m sorry.”

He sighed and fingered the hem of his bloomers. “It’s fine. I was feeling kind of overwhelmed, anyway.”

“Yeah, I remember my first shift. You’re doing great, though.”

“Really?” he asked.

“Sure,” I said. “Only don’t get too close to that guy.” I nodded at Mr. Kenney.

“Why?” Patrick asked, blinking in confusion.

“Oh, I just…heard he gets handsy when he’s been drinking.”

Lies, all lies.I didn’t know Mr. Kenney at all. I’d never seen him before tonight. But I went all in.

“…which is against the rules, but sometimes the newer staff don’t know how to handle it.”

“Oh, right,” Patrick said, regarding Mr. Kenney with wariness.

“I’ll look after him. You entertain the Youngbloods. They’re pretty wholesome.”

“Okay.” He glanced back at Mr. Kenney. “He’s fucking hot though, right? I’m not imagining it?”

I frowned.Back off, Patrick.

“Yeah, I don’t know. He had a bit of BO when I got close,” I said with an offhand air, like I wasn’t completely slandering the guy. Then I doubled down. “And his breath stinks.”

Patrick’s expression soured. “Gross. I’ll go check on the Youngbloods.”

“Yes, that’s a good idea,” I said, playing with the neck of my chemise.

Wow, I had sunk to a new low.

When Jacob handed me the Sazerac for Mr. Kenney, I contemplated downing the entire thing myself, except I never drank alcohol. But all of a sudden, I could see the appeal.

I sauntered back to Mr. Kenney, swaying my hips and pretending that I wasn’t a lying, cutthroat, selfish person.

“Here you are,” I said, smiling sweetly as I handed him the amber beverage in the cut-glass whiskey tumbler.
