I laughed. God, it was good to see her.
She picked up her phone. “What do you want? Pepperoni? Vegetarian? Hawaiian?”
“Can we get a medium Hawaiian and a medium Vegetarian?”
“Oh, you wild, wild man. Of course!”
“And a bottle of soda. Coke, if possible?”
She held up a hand. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. I’ll even get brownies.”
My eyes went wide. “They havebrownies?”
“Thebest.”

Esther’s apartment was a mishmash of furniture and décor, but there were mini-lights strung along the windows and the lingering scent of patchouli incense. I’d managed to have a quick smoke on the balcony, so I was chill now and feeling a lot better.
Esther waited until we’d had some bites of pizza before asking about my hookup.
“Sooooo,” she said, hooking a thread of cheese that had stretched from the pizza to her lips with her finger and breaking it. “I am dying to know about this recent sexcapade!Ifyou are willing to divulge. You don’t have to tell me, obviously. I promise not to hate you if you don’t.”
I laughed. I felt so much better now that I had a belly full of grease and ham and pineapple. And the Coke had perked me up, so that I didn’t feel so tired.
“You got me brownies. I’ll fucking tell you anything.”
“Yass!” She looked seriously pumped. She put aside her plate and settled in, staring at me with an intensity that would have scared me if I didn’t know her so well.
“All right. So…I was working at the club, and I needed a cigarette.”
Her nose wrinkled. She really didn’t appreciate my habit.
“I’ve cut down.”
“To zero?”
“Not yet.”
She rolled her eyes. “Fine, I don’t care. Keep talking.”
“I was taking a break out front, having a cigarette…”
“In your cute molly boy outfit?”
“Duh. I’m not gonna change to go outside for ten minutes.”
“Okay. And?” Her eyes were comically wide. I didn’t know what she was expecting.
“And so this guy comes along.”
“Oh yeah!” She fist-bumped the air over her head.
“And, uh, I guess he liked what he saw. He watched me all night. He even tied my laces when they came undone.”
Her eyes popped wider. “On yourcorset?”
“On my shoe. Jesus.”
