He splayed his hands out. “In theory, neither party is supposed to show anger or irritation in such cases—but he wasn’t happy.”

“I could tell. He almost ran me over on his way out.”

“Sorry.”

“Not your fault.”

“Anyway,” he said, rubbing his palms on his jeans and looking troubled. “It was embarrassing, and I felt bad for him, but I was glad when he left.”

“I mean, I can’t say I’m upset about it,” I said softly.

Alastair gazed at me. “You weren’t too happy about me bringing him.”

“No.”

“But…we didn’t make any promises.”

“I know. Well, my brain knew that. My body was being a little bitch, though.”

“Yeah?”

“I wastryingto be cool. I don’t have any claim on you.”

He stared at me with the sweetest, most lost look I’d ever seen on anyone. “I don’t know. I think maybe you do.”

I smiled, because that thought made me happy, and I couldn’t pretend it didn’t.

“I can see you’re not overly concerned about that,” he muttered.

I laughed. “No. I guess…the other night affected me, too.”

He put down his tea and leaned back in the leather chair, his gaze on me.

“So…what do we do now?” he asked.

He seemed so adrift and confused, when I knew exactly what I wanted.

We stared at each other in silence for a few beats, the current between us as strong as ever. He’d said he wanted to talk, but we had talked, and now I wanted to do something else. I had a feeling he might want to do it, too.

I put down my tea and stood, taking things slow so he had plenty of time to object. But his gaze tracked me as I moved forward and straddled him where he sat on the couch. He inhaled a breath, and his hands came to rest on my hips as I leaned in and held his gaze, our lips inches apart.

“This is whatIwant to do,” I said, my voice a whisper as I gazed at his soft lips and his wide, dark eyes that shone with intelligence and need. So much need. I traced the silver ring in his eyebrow with the tip of my finger, then touched a wayward curl of hair. “But I don’t have my bloomers or corset to seduce you.”

His breaths came quick as he stared at me. “You don’t need them.”

I brought my hand up to cup his furred chin and pressed my lips to his. He gripped my hips as if he were afraid of what I might do, but he was languid under my tongue.

The kiss deepened, our connection a perfect storm of arousal and desperation.

I worked the buttons of his shirt, unwrapping him as I kissed him with relentless need. He let me take control, even though I knew he could turn the tables at any moment.

I got his shirt open and found a nipple with my thumb, pleased with his reaction when I rubbed at it then pinched it. He groaned and pressed his covered erection against me, opening his mouth wide and snaking his tongue along mine.

“Oh fuck,” I said. “You taste so good.”

He panted like he’d been running, his eyes wide as his hands went higher and he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close.

“Toby…” he gasped. “Fuck.”
