“Better you don’t know too much,” he shuts me down and then pulls into a spot. We pull up just in time to see the car hauling Greta in for booking.

Flashing lights cast blue and red hues across the forecourt, turning it into something like a movie set. Kyle's partner strides over to open the car door, but it swings open with a violent force, knocking him flat on the ground while Greta comes out with her hand cuffed in front. What the hell?

Greta makes a break for it, and Kyle lunges, pinning her down. “What the fuck did you think you were doing?” he snarls into her ear, but she jabs him right in his injury. Kyle's face twists in agony. I hope to God he stays conscious. “Andrew, keep this bitch under control.” Greta is quicker and as soon as Kyle releases his grip. she jumps on Andrew, taking the gun off him.

“Drop it!” he commands, but she retreats. Who the fuck was I married to? I can hardly recognize her anymore. The woman in front of me, brandishing a gun and threatening to open fire, can't be the same person I shared my life with. My session with Miriana starts playing back in my mind making me open my eyes for real.

“Ioften find her mood shifts during her periods, thought that was just normal, but then it got frequent and irrational.”

“It’s possible she’s bipolar and doesn’t even know it.”

“Bipolar?” I shake my head in denial. “No, that’s not it. She’s always been... herself.”

“That doesn’t change the facts,” Miri says pensively, twirling her pen, “Personality disorders can evolve, and maybe the stress from her greed, the way she’s been, set it off.”

“Come on, Miri, you’re kidding, right? I would’ve noticed…” I stop mid-sentence as I catch Miriana’s grave look. No, I wouldn’t have noticed, just like I missed the manipulation and her affairs with Matthew, then Joel. I was so damn blind.

Snapping back to reality, I see her stepping back with Kyle advancing. The police have their guns trained on her, but Kyle's fearless, like he’s sure she won’t pull the trigger. I don’t share that certainty though.

“Chief!” one of the cops shouts, and I turn to him, confused as to why he’s causing a distraction. Spotting the officers, my throat tightens. Damn it! I head toward them.

Greta shifts her weapon, but her eyes dart between us. “Is she worth it?” she screams. “Is that whore really worth dying for?”

“Always,” we shoot back together.

“What's she got that I don't?” Greta's just spouting off now, buying time. But for what? A getaway? She wouldn't get far.

“Put the gun down, Greta. It's over,” Kyle commands firmly.

“What the hell does she have that I'm missing?” she repeats, brushing off my brother’s words.

“She's got my heart, my life, and my baby,” I throw back at her, fed up with this charade.

Shock flickers in her eyes, quickly overtaken by rage as she squeezes the trigger – but the gun clicks empty. My blood chills, and I catch my breath, anticipating the shot that could end Kyle's life. However, nothing happens. Greta persists, but the weapon remains unresponsive. It's at that moment she hurls the gun in our direction before making a hasty escape.

“Stop!” I yell at her. I can't make out what the other cops are saying or catch Kyle's commands. All I'm aware of is that a moment ago, Greta was running, and the next, as soon as she stepped onto the street, a car sent her soaring through the air. When we hurry to the scene, it's pure chaos. Kyle handles the driver, clearly in shock, while I declare my role to the police officers before crouching down beside Greta.

“I had to kill her…” She starts coughing, spurting blood as she goes into shock.

I take a step back, glaring at her with nothing but disdain, then I turn on my heel and walk off. She tried to kill Miri twice—twice. Why should I sully my hands with her blood? It wouldn't make things right anyway.

“Medics are on their way,” Kyle's partner lets us know.

“No need for that, she's dead,” I say as we head back to the precinct. The commotion of the other cops gets to me, bile rising in my throat, and I double over, retching into the rose bushes.

“Hey,” Kyle's hand on my back is reassuring, but right now, all I want is to get back to Miriana. “Let's go tie up this disaster.”

“You can close the case, she's gone.”

“Means less paperwork on my desk,” he says with a shrug, catching my look of surprise. “I don't feel one bit sorry for her. She got what she deserved, and if that makes me sound like some tough guy, so be it. She went after Miri and our baby.”

Our baby. She threatened my family—the one thing in this world that's untouchable. I whirl around and give Kyle a shove. “What the fuck were you thinking, man? She could've shot you!”

“She didn't even realize the safety was on,” he grins, pulling me into a brotherly embrace. He can tell I'm spent, and the sheer terror of almost losing him was like a tightening noose with every step he took. Ever since Mom and Dad were out of the picture, he's been my rock. If anything had happened to him, Miri would never have let me live it down. Hell, I couldn't have forgiven myself, either.

“Are we gonna catch hell for this?” I ask, still reeling from the chaos.

“Why? She's the one who caused all of it.” He turns on his heel and strides toward the entrance. “Let's wrap this up and head to Miri's. Move your ass, it's freezing out here.” I tag along quietly, and as we step into the office, his phone starts ringing. I see him snort, “Fuck you,” he mutters as his fingers tap away on the keyboard.
