“We wanted...”

“No excuses, Dean,” she takes a step back, “and you,” she looks at me, “you've broken every promise made.” Her empty eyes take my breath away.

I've let her down.

Hurt her.

The door slams with such force that it shakes my soul.

“Miri, wait.” Dean tries to run after her. I grab his arm, “Stop, give her some space.”

“I told you!” he shouts at me. Yes, he did, and I was so selfish not to listen. What the fuck have we done?

“What the hell are you sitting there for? Let's go!” he pulls my arm, but it's like I've lost control of my body. “Kyle, move your ass, or I swear to God if she gets lost in the woods, I'll kill you!”

I look up at him, “The woods?”

“She went out, damn it, move!” I jump off the couch and grab my jacket before leaving the cabin.

The silence around is deafening.

“Miriana!”

“Miri!” Dean echoes me, “Let's split up; she couldn't have gone far.”

My legs walk on their own, taking me to the stream. It's not far from here, and that's where she usually goes to meditate. The vegetation has partially covered the path, making it more rugged than expected. I hope Miri hasn't hurt herself, considering she was wearing slippers.

When I reach the clearing, I stop aside and watch her. She stands in front of the stream, angrily drying her face as she paces back and forth. She grabs a stone and throws it with a scream that sinks in my bones, then she collapses to the ground. I hurry toward her, worried. All of this is solely my fault.

“Baby,” I place my jacket on her shoulders, “can we talk?”

“Now you want to talk?” she shakes her head, “why not earlier? Why didn't you ask instead of acting behind my back? Where's the trust, Kyle? Where?”

“I don't regret doing it.” I await for her reaction that doesn't come. Damn it, Miri, get up! Throw something at me, yell at me, but not silence. I don't want that.

“Please, look at me.”

“I can't.”

I kneel beside her and force her to look at me. “If we had asked, what would you have said?”

“No!” It's her pride speaking, not her heart.

“That's a lie, and you know it.”

“I wouldn't have accepted because it would have hurt you even more, you stupid idiot!” Her eyes widen, realizing what she just said.

“Not everything revolves around me, baby. I want to give you the world, and even if I can't give you a child, I want you to experience this without regrets or doubts. That's why I chose, for you.” I wipe away her tears, losing myself in her eyes. “I love you more than my life, Miri, and I'm sorry.”

The slap she gives me shakes me. “I hate you!”

“No, you don’t.”

She hugs me. “You had no right, and don't do it again without my knowledge.”

I pull her close to me, breathing again. “I know, love.”

“Kyle!” Dean's voice reaches us. “Miri!”
