“You're nuts,” I laugh.
“Totally nuts about you.” He pulls me into a lingering kiss. “Let's get going, or Dean'll lose it.”
We get to the hospital to find Dean anxiously pacing in front of the entrance. I can't help but chuckle. I wonder if he and Kyle made a bet or something. It’s so like them.
After the accident, they were both always there for me, making sure I was okay. It was comforting at first, but after a week, it became stifling. I had to ask them both to back off, give me some room to breathe. I missed my routine. Simple things like cooking, laundry, shopping, and cleaning.
Dean comes over and opens the car door. “What took you guys? We live just around the block.”
“Chill out, dude. We're on time,” Kyle teases.
Dean gives him the middle finger as he helps me out of the car. “You look gorgeous,” he whispers, kissing my forehead.
“And you're a bundle of nerves,” I smile, sinking into his embrace. “I have a surprise for you if you don't faint first.”
“Ooh, I'm intrigued,” Dean murmurs, releasing me. We make our way into the hospital for the ultrasound. Hearing our baby's heartbeat never fails to thrill me. I never thought I'd get to experience this.
“Everything looks good, and this baby is in excellent health,” the doctor proclaims, printing out the ultrasound scans.
“And we already know that, Jessica. Don't keep us hanging, is it a boy or a girl?” Dean asks, unable to hide his impatience.
“Well, it's fun to see you guys like this,” the doctor giggles, winking at me. “It's a girl.”
Kyle grins triumphantly. “Told ya.”
“Guess we'll have to wait until next time for a boy,” Dean remarks, his eyes sparkling as he turns to me. “Thank you, little one,” he whispers.
I mime 'I love you' to him as the visit continues and they estimate my due date. Their voices fade into the background, my daughter's heartbeat and my own happiness the only things I can hear. Kyle's hand on mine brings me back to reality, and I silently thank whatever divine force has scripted my life story.
