One thing we didn’t have to worry about was getting enough attention. Every inhabitant of the market was watching us.

“Guess what, fucker?” she yelled back. “I didn’t give it to you a year ago, and I’m not giving it to you now. You sold me shit goods, and you know it.”

“Are you saying I sell crap?” he sneered, showing dark gray teeth.

“Yes. Crap, shit, garbage, whatever you want to call it, that’s what you’re peddling.” She turned to me, smiling. “This feelssogood. You have no idea how long I’ve been dying to tell this fucker what I think of him.”

She wasn’t bluffing or putting on a show. Her eyes were lit with pure joy as she turned back to him. She was enjoying every second.

“So what are you going to do about it? I’ll tell you what.Nothing. Not a single thing.”

She was truly insane. I couldn’t quite decide if I wanted to throw up or run, and she was vibrating with excitement. Someone could’ve plugged into her and lit up the Empire State Building on the voltage she was putting out.

Dirgon threw back his head, letting out an ear-splitting roar before swinging out a club of an arm.

My fear faded in that split second and my instincts kicked in. I jumped forward, my arm collided with his, and a blast of force flew out of me and sent him sprawling ten feet away, knocking over a couple of tables in the process. All the spectators had already moved farther back.

Just as promised, Dirgon was lying there, dazed and confused but definitely still breathing. He looked at me as if trying to figure out what had just befallen him.

“Oh, I’m sorry!” Cookie said. “Did my girlBilliehurt you? Try your shit again, and next timeBilliewill kill you.”

She was talking loud enough for the entire marketplace to hear her, but especially when she said my name. She might’ve been laying it on a little thick, but we’d need word to spread far and wide if the plan was going to work.

Not only did Dirgon not get up as we walked past him, but he cowered slightly. This monster everyone, except perhaps my psycho friend, was afraid of cowered away from me. The path in front of us cleared as we walked, everyone almost tripping over themselves to get out of our way.Myway. In a world full of monsters, I was the scariest thing here.

The moment there was some space between us and the marketplace, Cookie jumped and punched the air. “Wow, that was awesome. I’ve been waiting decades for someone to knock that big bully on his ass.”

“We forgot your pastries, and I’m not going back,” I said.

“Shit.”

Chapter Thirty-One

I was pulling my hair back, staring in the mirror, when Kaden walked in silently, coming to stand right behind me. Our eyes met in the mirror.

“I might not love the plan, but you’ve got this,” he said, putting his arms around me.

“You truly believe it?” I put my hands over his.

“I know it. I’d rather it wasn’t you, but you’re the only person who can pull it off.” His chest rose and fell. “You’re going to be alone for a while. If he senses me…”

“I know.” I smoothed down my shirt, trying to not look as nervous as I felt. If he sensed my fear, he might try to stop me. I might let him. That couldn’t happen.

“I’m ready. Let’s get this going.”

I took a step toward the door, and he caught my hand, tugging me to him and kissing me like he might not see me again.

“Don’t kiss me like I’m going to die. I can do this.”

“I’m kissing you like a man that’s discovered he’s found the love of his life and is ready to spend eternity with her.”

“Oh. Okay, well, you can do that again if you want.” I smiled up at him.

“When we get back, I’m going to do it until you’re begging me to stop.”

“Not sure that’ll happen, but you should definitely give it a try.”

There was a thud on the door. “Not sure what you two are doing in there, but maybe not the best timing,” Cookie yelled.
