Lark’s throat bobbed as she swallowed. “No.” She shook her head. “It was mostly people leaving me nasty messages over social media or sending me emails. I had a few threatening letters sent to the house through the mail, but nothing exactly like this.”

Graham nodded. “Whoever left this for you thought that leaving this note outweighed the risk of getting caught. To them, it was important for you to get this message.”

A chill vibrated down my spine. The thought of someone coming so close to her with ill intentions had me wanting to put my fist through a wall.

“What did you receive first, the text or the note?” Graham continued.

Lark cleared her throat. “The text.”

Graham’s gaze slid to August. “It could be an escalation.”

August’s muscles tensed. “Which means whoever it is might not stop with little notes.” He pulled in a deep breath, turning toward me. “I can set her house up with a max security system and can get cameras outside.”

I nodded at my brother. “If someone comes snooping around again, I want to make sure we know about it and can nail the creep.”

“Wait…what?” Lark gained all of our attention with her high pitched, panicked utterance. Her eyes were wide as she shook her head.

I frowned. “I have to make sure you’re safe, Lark.”

“I don’t want cameras at my house. Or a security system. It’s…it’s too much.”

My head started to pound with a headache. I rolled my neck, trying to loosen the tension there. “Someone threatened you,” I growled.

Lark wasn’t, or shouldn’t, be so much of my concern, but the thought of someone meaning to hurt her had all of my anxiety skyrocketing. I couldn’t let anything happen to her.

“Yeah, and it isn’t the first time. Probably won’t be the last,” she said.

My gaze flicked to Graham. I trusted his insight on the note. “If this person is already escalating…”

Lark shook her head again. “Or it’s two separate incidents.” She stepped closer to me, looking up into my face with those pretty brown eyes. “Thank you for looking out for me.” She glanced quickly at my brothers. “Thank you all for being so willing to help…but I don’t want cameras or a security system. Not right now.”

August and I met each other’s gaze. I didn’t want to leave her unprotected, but I also couldn’t overstep. I couldn’t very well put up cameras at her house without her permission. My jaw worked as I ground my back teeth together.

“Okay,” August said, his voice even. “But if anything else at all happens, you need to contact us immediately.”

Lark nodded. “I will.”

She looked back at me, and I forced myself to remain calm. “I’m still going to have Fox track that number.”

“Fine,” Lark agreed.

“I can look for prints on that note,” August cut in. “Paper isn’t the best medium for prints, but it’s worth a shot.”

Lark frowned. “You can run fingerprints?”

August flashed a quick grin. “I have connections.”

He nodded toward Graham who was still holding the note. “Come on, let’s get that thing in an evidence bag.”

The rest of my brother’s left the room, leaving me and Lark alone.

She moved her weight from one foot to the other in a nervous fidget. “I’m really sorry for ruining the night.”

She was close enough to touch, but I fisted my hands at my sides. “What do you mean?”

Lark nibbled on the corner of her lip, avoiding my gaze. “I didn’t mean for all your brothers to drop everything they were doing tonight and start working.” She let out a hard breath. “I just—I’m sorry.”

My fingers brushed the soft skin under her jaw, gently guiding her chin up so I could look her in those eyes. “Lark,” I said, my voice low, but firm. “Don’t be sorry. I’m glad you told me. It was the right thing to do.”
