Her face softened, and she placed a kiss on the side of my neck below my jaw. Her lips rekindled that fire in my veins. “I keep dreaming about that night…” Her eyes went unfocused. “I think I’m starting to remember him.”

“Him?”

“The man who was in our house. I saw him leaving.”

I let that sink in before I jerked back, propping myself up on my elbow. “You—you saw him that night?”

Lark pressed her lips together. “I didn’t remember anything about him to give the police any kind of description. All I remembered was a man in black. Nothing else. I couldn’t give a height or weight or anything. The police decided not to release the fact that I’d seen him to protect me.”

“But you’re starting to remember?” My heart rate escalated.

Her brows narrowed. “Barely. But…the picture is becoming clearer now. Or maybe I’m just making it up in my dreams.”

“What do you remember?” If she could give any sort of description, no matter how vague, it could help.

“Not much.” She shook her head. “I only saw his back as he was leaving. He was wearing a black ski mask. But he was tall, probably around your height, and he had…dark hair.”

“How do you know?”

Her face screwed up in concentration. “He glanced back into the house before he walked out the door.” She touched her forehead. “Some of his hair was sticking out of the mask around his eyes.”

I let out a breath. “That’s something.”

She lifted a shoulder. “Barely.”

“I think you should talk to Xander. He’s the detective on Lily’s case, and if this person had anything to do with what happened to Lily, it could help.”

The thought of her had a pang hitting my chest, but it wasn’t as sharp this time. Lark had been right. It wasn’t my fault what happened to Lily; it was the fault of the man who stole her life from her.

The same man who had something to do with stealing my little sister away from me.

“Maybe,” Lark said, “but not right now, okay?” She twisted around to look at the clock on my nightstand. “I should get going.”

She started to get up, but I wrapped my arms tighter around her, pulling her against me again. “Why?” I didn’t want her to go. I wanted her to stay right here in this warm bed and make me forget about all the crap going on outside of these four walls.

She gave a little, disappointed groan. “I don’t want to, but Jojo has been running the store all day and I should help her close up.”

My jaw clenched, and I buried my nose in her hair, savoring her floral scent. “Would you want to stay over tonight?” I asked hesitantly. If she had to go right now, that was fine as long as I knew she was coming back.

Lark smiled. “If you want me to.”

“I’d be honored.” Leaning in, I pressed my lips to hers. That fire awakened in my heart, and it took more effort than it should to stop kissing her.

“I’ll be here,” she whispered, and then she finally managed to wiggle out of my arms and slipped out of bed.

The loss of her warmth made me shiver. I watched her gather up her clothes, thoroughly enjoying the view and already aching for her to come back.

Every part of me was stunned that I’d fallen so hard for my sister’s best friend. My head spun. Every hesitation I’d had went right out the window.

By the time Lark was fully clothed and gave me a kiss goodbye, all I could think about was the next time I got to take that sweet sweater off her.

“What’s up, Fox?” I said, answering my phone.

Lark left ten minutes earlier, and I was attempting to clean up the embarrassing mess I’d made of my office, when my phone rang.

My brother was quiet a beat before he spoke. “I have information on that mystery number sending Lark threatening texts.”

I froze, dropping the book I’d picked up back on the floor. “What?”
