Sasuke's eyes narrowed, but he didn't lower the gun. "Let her go."

Harris laughed and moved his face against mine, licking the rainwater from my cheek.

I cringed and then gasped as a blur of flesh zoomed by my face.

With a single strike, Sasuke punched Harris in the face and knocked him out cold.

My sister's ex crumpled to the ground, motionless.

"Oh my god, did you..."

"No," Sasuke said, hiding his weapon. "Let's get out of here. I only kill on my own terms. He can live one more day."

Chapter ten

Sasuke

? ??

Why did the sightof Julia in danger affect me like that?

I was still shaking, filled with hot anger, by the time we got back to the hotel. The sight of Harris' hands on her, the knife at her throat, filled me with an indescribably protective feeling that I'd never once felt before in my entire life.

It wasn't just the knife. Hell, I was used to daily violence and death. It was the look in her eyes, the pure terror as she silently begged me to help her. The sort of look I only usually experienced as the bad guy, never the hero.

That realization shook me deep to my core.

Once we got back to the hotel, I stripped off my soaked hoodie and jacket.

Julia was shivering beside me.

"Go," I said. "Go warm up in the shower."

Julia looked at me with big eyes. "Are you sure?"

"Do you want to catch a cold?" I countered.

Julia looked down and shook her head. She went to the bathroom, pausing as her hand rested on the doorknob.

"Thanks," she whispered.

"For what?" I asked, digging through my pockets to find my phone.

"For saving me."

I fumbled, looking up and catching a glimpse of her as the bathroom door shut with a click.

I'd saved her... All my life I'd never been the one to do the saving.

I was the guy who took lives, not protected them. Now, here I was, caught up in this weird mess. Was I really saving somebody?

"Fuck Sasuke... What's your plan now?" I asked myself, still cold and wet from the rain, standing amongst bags of supplies and the phone in my hand.

There was no doubt Julia needed to be safe. Her stalker had turned violent. If I wanted to protect her, I'd have to keep an even closer eye on her.

Julia was both my captive and my responsibility. Although I'd never intended to harm her, even when I still thought she was her sister, her safety had become paramount.

The sound of the shower broke the silence.
