I cringed, watching Harris break down. His tears slowly turned to laughter.
"But it's ok, I have you now." He reached out to touch my hair.
"You're fucking crazy," I hissed. "Rebecca isn't coming back. Nothing you do will bring her back!"
"Shut up! Don't you think I know that?" Harris slapped me across the face and smothered his cheek against mine, his breath hot against my ear. "But at least I can pretend for a little while."

I should have neverlet her out of my sight. I should have protected her. But I was weak. I failed her.
I glanced at my phone, using the map on the tracking app I installed on Julia's phone last night.
Why did I leave? Well, it was pretty obvious she didn't want me around. At least her mind didn't. Her body and heart, though ... that was complicated.
I'd only left for a few hours, and now she was halfway across the city in some sketchy neighborhood. I told myself that she was safe, but I knew the truth. Harris had got to her. In the shorttime I was away, he'd swooped in like a bird of prey and stolen her.
My hands gripped the steering wheel tighter as I raced through the backstreets toward the blinking icon on the tracking app. The cute little houses slowly gave way to run-down buildings and old apartments.
I was, as the English saying went, on the wrong side of the tracks.
My knuckles whitened around the steering wheel, gripping it tightly as I approached my destination.
Julia was in trouble — big trouble. And the bastard responsible for her kidnapping had a taste for depravity. He was a monster. I clenched my jaw, knowing that if he had harmed even a hair on her head, I would make him wish he was never born.
I parked at the back of a derelict building, careful not to alarm anyone. I was certain that an outsider like me would attract attention, especially driving an expensive car.
I glanced at the app again. Yes, she was here, I was certain.
Thankfully, it wasn't a large apartment building, only three floors, and the tracking app should help me narrow things down a bit. The rest of it would have to be up to pure instinct. Thankfully, I had worked with enough psychos that I could think like they did. She was probably in the basement - less chance of others overhearing anything there.
I double-checked that my gun was loaded and I had a bullet ready in the chamber. My favorite knife was on my belt, too, prepared for close combat.
I silently approached the building, listening carefully for any sound. I knew that silence meant danger, and my senses were heightened. Every creak, every rustle, every whisper was a potential threat.
I took the stairs two at a time, moving swiftly yet quietly. I was determined to reach Julia before Harris could harm her further. As I descended to the basement, I considered the situation, weighing my options. I needed to act fast…but not too fast.
The app had an accuracy range of fifty meters, so I knew she was close by. I had two options: an apartment with a cute welcome mat and a Christmas wreath that should have been taken down weeks ago or one that didn't have a hint of the personality of the person living there.
The choice was obvious.
Holding my breath, I slowly tried the doorknob, finding it locked. A quiet entrance wasn't an option anymore.
I set my shoulders and let out a hard breath as I slammed my heel into the door, knocking it right off the hinges.
Gun held straight, I waited for a sound.
Nothing.
After a few more seconds, I spun around the corner and peeked in. The apartment was empty, covered in dust and mouse droppings. No one had lived there for a long time.
"Fuck," I breathed.
Then, a muffled scream sent my senses ablaze.
