"What... What happened?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat, mustering up enough courage to speak. "You were attacked," I replied softly. "Harris stabbed you."

Sasuke's eyes widened, his gaze darting around the room. "Harris..." He repeated, his voice trailing off.

"Yes," I confirmed. "But don't worry, he's gone."

Sasuke's face hardened, his expression turning stormy. "Right, I remember now," he said.

I nodded, wishing the memory of watching Harris die would leave my mind. I couldn't get it out of my head. The fight between Harris and Sasuke played through my mind over and over.

"I'm just glad you're ok," I said. My voice cracked, and tears threatened to overcome me. I leaned over and held his hand between my own. "I'm so sorry."

"It's not your fault," Sasuke said. "You know I was sent here to take care of him." He smiled ruefully. "It was just a nice coincidence that I saved you, too."

Hot tears streamed down my cheeks. I hadn't wanted anyone to die. I didn't want Harris to be killed. He was fucked up, sure, but no one deserved to die. But, when he stabbed Sasuke, he'd sealed his own fate. My body trembled as I sobbed.

"It's ok," Sasuke said as he tried to soothe my grief. "You didn't do anything wrong. The guilt and punishment should be mine alone to bear."Sasuke lifted my chin and wiped away my tears. "No matter what happens now, you were worth it, Julia."

***

A week later, Sasukewas released from the hospital, and we went back home.

The combined power of the Japanese Yakuza clan and the local Triads were pulling strings and giving bribes to all the right people. With the help of a good lawyer, Sasuke wouldn't see any jail time, thanks to a strong case built on a plea of self-defense. Which, I guess it was when I thought about it.

I tried not to think about the corruption. I just wanted Sasuke to be safe.

The now familiar feeling of Sasuke's arms wrapped around me as I was pouring morning coffee.

"Good morning," he said, nuzzling his face into my hair. Or, at least, what was left of it. After the incident, I'd cropped it to a pixie cut, not wanting to be reminded of the physical transformation that Harris forced upon me.

"Morning," I said, shivering as he kissed my neck.

"You didn't wake me up," he said.

"You were sleeping so peacefully," I countered.

"Yes, but I wanted some time with you in bed," Sasuke chuckled.

I felt his hardness pressing against the small of my back.

"You know, you could've just asked," I teased, setting down the coffee on the kitchen counter.

"And miss this opportunity to tease you?" Sasuke laughed huskily, wrapping his arms around my waist. "I think not." He nibbled on my earlobe, making me squirm with delight.

"You're impossible," I giggled, wriggling in his grasp.

Sasuke's teasing laughter echoed around us, the warmth of his breath stirring the hairs on my neck.

I melted into his embrace, savoring the intimacy. Our relationship was unconventional yet incredibly fulfilling. We understood both the beauty and darkness that lurked within us, accepting the complexities of our connection.

"I love you," I whispered softly, my voice barely audible.

"And I love you, too," Sasuke murmured, his voice rough with emotion.

His fingers gently traced patterns along my bare arm, sending goosebumps racing up my spine.

As he pulled me closer, I could feel the steady rise and fall of his chest beneath my cheek. The intoxicating scent of his cologne mingled with the lingering aroma of freshly brewed coffee, creating a heady blend that made my heart race.
