“For doing this with me. I know you think it’s a bad idea.”
“It’s a terrible idea, but I know you’d find a way of doing it with or without me, so here I am.” I reach my hand around the back of her head and drag her back onto my lips again, it makes the wounds on my back sting but she’s worth the pain.
“Come on, detective, let's go see what ya got.” I pull out the yard and head toward the address.
We pull up outside the house about an hour later, and Savannah wastes no time getting out the truck and heading straight for the front door.
“Red, whatcha doin’?” I quickly chase after her.
“What do you think I’m doing? We didn’t come all this way just to look at the place. We need explanations. Don’t you wanna know who that girl is?” She boldly knocks the door and I search around hoping no one’s in. There are no other cars parked outhere and everything seems a little too neat. There are no boots or shoes on the porch. All the outbuildings are locked up securely and when I look inside through a window, not a thing is out of place in the kitchen.
“Darlin’, the place is empty,” I tell her, hoping she’ll drop this so we can head back home.
“Maybe they popped into town or something?” She sits her stubborn ass down on the porch swing and folds her arms. “We can wait.”
“Darlin’, you could be waitin’ here all day… And for someone who may not even arrive,” I point out.
“Whatever it takes,” she tells me with a clever smile on her face that makes me want to fuck the sass right out of her.
“Oh, look, turns out we won’t have to wait after all.” She gestures her head to the dirt track behind me and when I turn around and see an old Chevrolet driving toward us, it immediately gets my guard up.
“What you folk doin’ out here?” An old man in overalls and a blue baseball cap gets out, holding a cocked rifle over his arm.
“You better put that thing away, old man,” I warn him, placing my body in front of Savannah.
“Not while you're trespassing.” He stares back at me coldly.
“This place yours?” I check.
“No.” He shakes his head.
“Then mind your business and be on your way.” I nod my head toward his truck but he still doesn’t budge.
“I look after the place for the owner. And they weren’t expecting no visitors,” he informs us.
“How did you know we were here? There's nowhere around here for miles.” Savannah steps back out in front of me, and I grab her back so I can keep her protected.
The old man lifts his eyes up to the camera that's attached to the beam under the porch. “Place is covered from all angles. Iknew you were comin’ soon as you pulled onto Westfield Road. That road only leads to one place and that’s here. So I’ll ask again. What you folk doing here?”
“Looking for our dream house.” Savannah catches me by surprise. “Me and my fiancé were just taking a drive and we saw this place from the road. I just had to come and have a closer look.” She wraps her arms around my neck and kisses my cheek. “He works in construction and he’s determined to build me the perfect house before we’re married, aren’t ya, hunny?” She screws her nose up cutely.
“I sure am.” I grip her hip and squeeze so tight I know she’ll want to squeal.
“Don’t look much like a construction worker to me.” The old man looks me up and down.
“Oh, you’d be surprised, he’s extremely talented with his hands.” Savannah smiles at me seductively before turning her head toward the old man again.
“Could you put us in touch with the person who owns this place? We’d love to see the inside and they’re obviously not around?”
“No,” the old man tells her firmly.
“What? Not even a number? I thought you said you looked after this place?”
“I do, and I don’t have to explain myself to you. You're trespassing, now be on your way.”
“Sir, I just…”
“Leave.” The old fuck raises his voice and takes a step forward, and I quickly shove Savannah out the way, grabbing the old cunt’s rifle by the barrel, then turning it sideways. I use both my hands to grip its shaft and shove it up under his chin, pinning him to the door of his truck
