“You never let them sleep at your apartment, though.”

“Felicity told you that, I presume.”

“Yeah.”

“Ginger has a big mouth.”

I kept prying. “Are you not open to more than one-night stands at this point?”

“Are you not open to minding your business?” He grimaced. “I haven’t met a single person worth having more with.”

“Are youlookingfor more, though?”

“I’m absolutely not.”

“So you’re gonna live the rest of your life alone? You’re only thirty-seven.”

“I suppose Felicity divulged my age, too.”

“You’re older than I thought. You look much younger. I’d guessed about thirty-two.”

“Must be all the gin keeping me youthful.”

“That’s gotta be it.” I chuckled.

Sig turned the tables. “I thought you were the one who preached about finding happiness fromwithin. Why do I need someone to be happy?”

“Finding happiness from within doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive for human connections. You need to be happy inside, but sometimes another person can enhance that. I feel like you don’t have either of those things.”

“Well, thank you for your miserable take on me. Considering you’ve known me all of two days, it will be taken with a grain of salt.”

When the car in front of us stopped abruptly, Sig slammed on the brakes and reached his arm out in front of me, as if to keep me from plunging forward. The palm of his big, masculine hand pressed against my ribcage, causing what felt like a bolt of electricity to shoot through me.

My God, I’m hard up.My voice shook. “What was that?”

“Some people can’t drive.” He flashed me a mischievous grin. “Youof all people should know that.”

I sighed, laying my head back on the seat. Putting his arm out to protect me had been completely instinctual. He was rough around the edges, but there was clearly a caring and protective side in there.

I straightened in my seat. “Anyway, I’m done interrogating you about your personal life.”

“Fantastic.”

We drove in silence for a couple of minutes before I turned to him. “You’re welcome to ask me anything you want. You know, if this whole trip is still an interview of some sort. I don’t know where things stand on that.”

“I haven’t made a decision one way or the other.”

“Did something change to make you consider moving forward again? You said you weren’t ready just yesterday…”

“You said you were leaving, and yet…you’re still here.”

Crossing my arms, I sank back into the seat. “I’m probably insane for that.”

“I agree.”

I shook my head. “I love how you deflect whenever you’re asked something serious.”

He sighed. “I’m still unsure about things. I may neverfeeltruly ready. What I need to decide is whether I want to go through with it despite that.”
