“Don’t leave, Sig.”

I froze.Don’t leave? Is she mad? She’s half-naked.

“I’m about to slip under the suds,” she said. “I’ll be covered. I want to talk to you.” She paused. “I’ll tell you when it’s safe to turn around.”

I swallowed. It will never be safe with you.My pulse raced, and my dick struggled to comprehend this situation. It wasn’t supposed to be incredibly excited by such a prospect.

“Okay. You can turn around,” she finally said.

I turned to find her enveloped in the soapy water. Much to my relief, you could indeed see nothing below her neck.

“Hi.” She smiled.

“Hi,” I said, not moving from my spot near the door.

“You can come closer.”

Against my better judgment, I relented, moving forward and sitting down on the ground a few feet from the bathtub. I tried my best to ignore what I imagined to be heaven hidden beneath those bubbles.

“You went to Leo’s instead of back to London so you could tell him the news?”

“Yeah.”

She nodded. “I told Lavinia—I had to—and my dad. But that’s it.” She lifted an arm and ran a hand along her smooth skin. “I’m surprised you came back here tonight.”

“I wanted to see you,” I admitted. “Talk to you.”

Her eyes widened. “You did?”

“I need to apologize for shutting down earlier, for not acknowledging the impact the pregnancy news must have on you. You’re the one most affected here. Leo asked me how you were doing, and I was ashamed to realize I hadn’t asked.”

“It’s okay, Sig.” She smiled. “There’s no playbook for this situation.”

“Howareyou doing?”

“It feels like I’m outside of myself, watching all this unfold.” She moved around beneath the water, a stray bubble flying into the air. “Maybe I feel that way because this baby isn’t mine. Not sure if I’d feel differently if it were. Then again, I don’t really have any signs of pregnancy yet.” She closed her eyes. “Well, there’s one. But I’m embarrassed to admit it to you.”

“What is it?”

“Not going to say right now.”

“Alright.”

“Anyway…” She sighed. “I also never asked howyoufelt after we got the news.”

“I’m gobsmacked that it happened on the first try.”

“Me, too.” She nodded. “It’s strange how we got the call right when you were talking about Britney, when we were looking at the photo. It makes me feel…like she was there.”

My chest tightened. “Perhaps.”

Silence hung in the air for a few moments.

“I know this is hard for you,” Abby added. “I didn’t expect you to be all that excited. You don’t have to pretend to feel a certain way for my sake. You have a right to feel anything you need to, even if that’s sadness right now.”

Abby didn’t give the impression she was saying things to appease me. I believed her words came from the heart. “You make it very difficult, you know.”

“Make what difficult?” she asked.
