In the reflection of the glass, my face looked determined, eyes set with grim resolve.

The sounds of our synchronized efforts echoed throughout loading bay.

The remaining alien male couldn’t reach his pod ceiling and instead marched back and forth, hissing and glaring at our attempts to escape.

The metallic clang of the butt of the plasma cannon reverberated within the confined space, but with each blow, the ceiling seemed to weaken just a fraction more.

“Eight…”

But time wasn’t on our side.

I glanced over at the other pod and could see the alien male was making impressive headway.

The cracks had widened.

I worked harder and with three powerful thrusts, there was a loud, pained groan as the metal gave way.

“Seven…”

The ceiling had bent upwards.

It wasn’t much, but it was enough.

My hands were slick with sweat, my muscles burning from the exertion.

With one final push, a significant chunk of my pod’s ceiling gave way.

I quickly clambered up, pulling myself through.

“Six…”

Success!

I was free!

But Aurora wasn’t.

And that was the whole point of this escape attempt.

I propelled myself towards Aurora’s pod.

The sight of her, locked inside, struggling, filled me with a new surge of urgency.

The pods were designed to withstand the rigors of space travel and protect its inhabitant at all costs.

Given that mine was now half-ripped open, I could only imagine the security measures in place on hers.

I landed on her pod, my hands trying to find some purchase on the sleek surface.

I strained, attempting to lift the top, my fingers clawing for any opening or flaw.

But it was futile.

“Five…”

The pod was sealed tight, its construction anticipating this exact kind of interference.

There was no way I could break it open in time.
