“Damn it!” I cursed, banging my fist on the surface.

“Four…”

Aurora looked up, her eyes wide, filled with panic but also a glimmer of hope upon seeing me.

I could see the desperation in Aurora’s eyes, reflected in the dome of her sealed pod.

The life we had shared, albeit in a gruesome simulated arena, flashed through my mind.

Every touch, every laugh, every stolen moment amidst chaos.

The thought of losing her now, after everything we had been through, was unbearable.

“Three…”

Time seemed to slow.

My gaze darted around frantically, searching for anything, any hope, any way out.

And then, just as hope seemed lost, my eyes landed on it — a small, inconspicuous button labeled, “Emergency Release.”

“Two…”

Without a second thought, I slammed my fist onto it.

A klaxon blared and red warning lights strobed the pod, bathing everything in a sinister crimson hue.

I could hear the mechanism inside Aurora’s pod whirring into life, and with a mechanical click, the lid released.

Reacting instantly, I lunged forward, reaching into the pod and grabbing Aurora’s outstretched hand.

With strength fueled by sheer adrenaline, I yanked her out of the pod, pulling her close to my chest, and leaped to the floor.

I took the brunt of the fall so she felt none of it.

Micro-seconds felt like eternity, but it was time enough.

In a gut-churning moment, the pods surrounding us activated and shot forward like missiles, leaving a trail of cold white light in their wake.

The scene was mesmerizingly beautiful yet terrifying, the realization hitting me that had Aurora been a fraction of a second slower, she would have been among those pods.

But she wasn’t.

Holding her close, I reveled in the sensation of her against me.

Every touch felt more profound, every sensation more heightened.

The aroma of her hair, the rhythm of her heart against mine, the softness of her lips — they were all real.

Unable to resist, I pulled her even closer, capturing her lips in a searing kiss.

It was a testament to our victory, our survival against the odds.

The kiss deepened, becoming more passionate, more urgent.

The taste of her was intoxicating.

It was as if I was discovering her all over again, and in that infinite expanse of the cosmos, we were the only two beings that mattered.
