Perhaps it was pride, maybe rage, or a fusion of both.

My stomach dropped.

Whatever connection or understanding we’d hoped for was clearly not on the table.

It lunged.

Fast and powerful, it darted toward us with an agility that was startling for something of its size.

I tried to move, but my legs wouldn’t obey me, like they’d turned to stone.

But Jayas, always ready, always protective, stepped forward. “Aurora, get behind me!” he shouted, positioning himself between the beast and me.

With adrenaline pumping, Jayas’s body glowed in a hue I hadn’t seen before, and a low rumble emanated from him.

Then, a surprising thing happened.

Rather than clashing head-on with the beast, Jayas spread his arms wide and stopped in his tracks. “Listen to me,” he roared, louder than I’d ever heard him.

It wasn’t a scream of anger, but a roar of determination, a demand for peace.

The creature skidded to a halt, mere inches from Jayas, taken aback by the unexpected move.

“We don’t want to fight,” Jayas reiterated, locking eyes with the creature, his voice gentle this time, contrasting the ferocity from a moment ago. “Let’s end this vicious cycle.”

The creature, still seemingly confused, took a moment to respond.

But when it did, it was clear.

With another throaty growl, it swiped a massive clawed hand toward Jayas.

In that split second, everything seemed to move in slow motion.

My scream got caught in my throat.

I could see Jayas’s resolve harden, his face set with a mixture of determination and regret.

Then, with a roar of his own, Jayas sprinted forward, directly into the path of the oncoming creature, meeting its force with his own.

And as their forms collided, the room seemed to shake with the sheer intensity of it all.

Jayas

Colliding with the creature felt like being hit by a comet.

Its raw power was evident in every lunge, each swipe of its massive, clawed limbs.

The sharpness of its talons was clear by the way it tore at anything it touched.

However, while it had strength and brute force, I had agility and determination on my side.

Its first swing was a downward arc, aiming for my head.

I sidestepped, feeling the rush of air as its claws narrowly missed.

Using its momentary imbalance, I quickly vaulted over its back, landing a solid kick in the process.

But it didn’t seem to phase the creature.
