Fear choked me.

With the fast-approaching alien and the relentless river, it felt like all odds were against us.

I felt a strong hand grab mine, and Jayas pulled me close, wrapping an arm around me. “Hold your breath,” he instructed.

With that, he dove, pulling us beneath the water’s surface.

The world became a muted blend of blues and greens, and the muted sounds of the river flowed around us.

Jayas’s tactic was clear: use the river’s undercurrent to put distance between us and our pursuer.

As the seconds continued to tick on, my lungs began to scream for air.

I tried to kick up, to breach the surface, but Jayas held me tight, his eyes locked onto mine, conveying a silent message of trust.

I felt the powerful tug of the current whip me through the water, but it was no use if I couldn’t breathe!

Jayas pulled me to him and pressed his lips against mine.

Shocked, I attempted to pull away from him, but he maintained his iron grip on my shoulders.

His tongue forced my lips apart, and he gently breathed into my mouth, filling me with sweet oxygen.

His lips were surprisingly soft, I tried to not get lost in the sensation, and the feel of his powerful muscular body pressed against mine.

Jayas gently pressed my lips back together again with his tongue before pulling back and looking me over.

His skin was almost the same shade as the water, and with the sunlight shining down and picking out his scales, I thought he looked ethereal and magical.

And the most handsome beast I had ever laid eyes on.

The current’s pull weakened, and Jayas pulled us up to the surface.

Once we breached, I sucked in huge lungfuls of air.

“Come on,” he said. “We have to get to the riverbank.

A guttural roar sounded behind us.

We whirled around to see the water-adapted alien male zooming toward us, his tall sharklike fin stabbing out of the water’s surface.

Its black eyes were locked on me with a predatory hunger.

Jayas pulled me behind him, assuming a defensive stance. “Get to the riverbank, Aurora!” he growled, his eyes never leaving the approaching threat. “Go! Now!”

The two clashed, the impact sending shockwaves through the water.

The alien’s claws wrapped around Jayas, trying to pull him under, while Jayas fought to keep above the surface.

Jayas slammed his fist into the creature’s head with heavy thuds like a sledgehammer to concrete.

Each blow made the monster shudder, having to shake its head before it continued with its attack.

But it continued, and I didn’t think it was going to stop.

Jayas’s breathing grew heavier as the battle wore on.

The creature seemed to be wearing him down.
