Or would it plant eggs inside me?
“No!” I cried out and, before I knew it, the creature had turned me around and brought me face to face with it.
It wasn’t the shark.
Or its dead, black beady eyes.
It was Jayas’s face.
Calm, his golden eyes caring and beautiful.
I looked back and saw the other beast was no longer there.
Only a torn fragment of his fin floated on the water’s surface.
Somehow, Jayas had gotten the better of it and come out on top.
I hadn’t been more relieved to see anyone my entire life.
I fell into his arms — as I lacked the strength to do much else.
He sported wounds across his brow and cheek but was otherwise remarkably untouched considering his earlier battle with the river monster from hell.
“I thought… I thought I’d lost you,” I said.
“Almost,” Jayas said with a tired smile.
His voice, strained by the roaring water, reached my ears: “Do you want to drown or suffocate?”
