Every rustle, every shadow seemed to be another potential threat.

I spotted something sailing through the air and immediately stopped and pulled Aurora protectively behind me.

“W-What is it?” she said haltingly.

I looked again and saw that it was a crate with parachutes attached to it.

My shoulders heaved a sigh of relief. “Nothing. Just a supply drop.”

“A supply drop? What’s that?”

I motioned to it and she watched as it descended into the jungle somewhere.

“What kind of supplies?” she asked.

“Weapons, medicine. All kinds of things. But nothing that will help us pass through the jungle unnoticed.”

We were making our way through a particularly dense thicket when I felt it — the low, rumbling growl of one of the other males.

I instinctively pushed Aurora behind me, readying myself for the attack.

Emerging from the shadows was the Xerok, one of the most ruthless of the alien males.

He and I had clashed before, and I knew he wouldn’t go down easily.

Aurora, sensing the imminent danger, whispered:

“Jayas, we need torun.”

But it was too late.

The Xerok lunged.

We clashed, bodies slamming into trees and crashing through the underbrush.

Our alien physiologies allowed for enhanced strength and agility, and the fight was a frenetic blur of strikes and parries.

As we fought, I could hear Aurora’s soft cries, urging me to be careful, to stay safe.

But my focus was on the Xerok.

I couldn’t let him win; Aurora’s safety was at stake.

Then, as I was about to land a finishing blow, a scream pierced the night air.

I looked up to seeanotheralien male, this one more massive and brutish than the Xerok, grabbing Aurora.

The world slowed.

Every fiber of my being screamed at me to go to her, to protect her.

But the Xerok was still there, a living threat.

Making a split-second decision, I delivered a powerful kick to the Xerok’s midsection, sending him crashing into a nearby tree.

Without waiting to see if he would recover, I sprinted in the direction of Aurora’s screams.

The underbrush seemed thicker, the path more treacherous.
