It looked so innocent, as if it weren’t really capable of its inherent horror. “Jayas, I…”

He raised a hand to silence me. “I pray you never have to use it, but I can’t bear the thought of them getting to you.”

Gazing into his eyes, I leaned down and pressed my lips to his in a soft, lingering kiss, trying to convey all the emotion I felt. “I promise to come back for you,” I whispered against his lips.

Breaking away, I grabbed the poison needles and buried them in my pocket, dashing off into the jungle.

The dense underbrush whipped at my legs, the eerie sounds of alien creatures echoing around me.

But the thought of Jayas, vulnerable and waiting, fueled my determination.

The looming danger of the other alien males was ever-present, but the deadly thorns were a grim reassurance.

Every step took me closer to the supply drop and, hopefully, salvation for Jayas.

I would return to him.

We would mate when the time was right.

And together, we’d face whatever challenges the Malquarans threw our way.

The air was humid, making every breath feel labored.

My heart raced as I darted from tree to tree, avoiding the open paths.

Jayas’s plea played in my mind like a broken record.“Stay hidden. Avoid them at all costs.”

I almost ran headfirst into an alien male.

He was massive, covered in dark, mottled scales and carrying a heavy blade, its surface reflecting the twin suns in a threatening glint.

I ducked behind a thick vine-covered tree, praying he hadn’t seen me.

Holding my breath, I peeked around the trunk.

His heavy footfalls grew fainter as he moved in the opposite direction, thankfully unaware of my presence.

Sighing in relief, I quickly moved on, trying to get my bearings in this chaotic jungle.

Before long, I saw the unmistakable glint of metal.

The supply drop!

My hope soared.

But as I got closer, my heart sank.

Another alien male was already there, rummaging through the crate.

This one was different — less bulky, with iridescent purple scales and an elongated snout.

He seemed to be assessing the contents, discarding what he found useless.

He had strange futuristic weapons strapped to his body and what looked to be grenades hanging from his belt.

He was kitted out better than a Special Forces unit!
