The sound of metal and glass crashing caught my attention.

The medkits!

He was throwing them over the platform’s edge, into the void below.

Panic surged through me.

Those were likely the only medical supplies around.

Without them, Jayas’s chances at a full recovery were slim.

There was a rustle beside me, and I turned to see a small creature scurrying up to the crate.

It looked harmless, like a cross between a rabbit and a lizard, but it seemed to be distracting the alien male.

He tried to swat it away, but the creature was persistent, darting around him and nipping at his heels.

Unable to deal with the wild creature any longer, the male grabbed the crate and hurled the whole thing over the platform’s side.

I suppose it made sense.

If there was nothing he could use then he didn’t wantanyoneto benefit from it.

The alien male headed into the jungle, the bizarre wild creature still nipping at his heels.

Once I was confident he was gone, I crossed the narrow clearing and approached the edge of the platform where he’d thrown the supplies.

My heart skipped a beat.

Contrary to my worst fears, the medical kits hadn’t been sucked into the cold void of space.

Instead, they had landed on a latticework of tree roots, jutting out in a crisscross pattern.

The medkits lay scattered across the roots, glinting like gems in a spider’s web.

All I had to do was reach them.

I looked around, trying to find the most secure point to start my descent.

Taking a deep breath, I chose the tree whose roots had turned out to be a saving grace.

It seemed sturdy and I started my climb down.

As I lowered myself, I recalled memories of climbing trees back on Earth, memories that now seemed distant and dreamlike amidst this surreal reality.

I was almost there, my fingers just inches from the nearest medkit when I heard an unsettlingsnap.

One of the roots beneath my foot gave way.

The tree might be strong but the roots were fragile.

Panic gripped me as I desperately tried to maintain my balance.

For a moment, time seemed to slow, and all I could hear was my heartbeat drumming in my ears.

Then I felt it — another root snapping.

My body pitched forward, sending me crashing onto the latticework.
