Pain shot through my side as I collided with the medkits and roots.

Through tiny narrow gaps, I could make out the dark depths of space below.

And the death that awaited me there.

Gritting my teeth, I reached out, managing to grab a handful of supplies before a larger section of the latticework collapsed beneath me.

Desperate, I scrambled to find something, anything, to hold onto.

My fingers closed around a thick, sturdy root, halting my downward spiral.

Taking deep, steadying breaths, I tried to calm my racing heart.

The roots felt tenuous and fragile beneath me.

Each movement could be my last before they gave way.

Using every ounce of my strength and determination, I began the perilous journey back up.

Every second was torture, every creak of the roots amplifying my fear that they’d break.

But I had the medical kits; failure was not an option.

Jayas was depending on me.

After what felt like hours, I finally hoisted myself back onto the platform, the medkits clutched tightly in my grasp.

My muscles screamed in protest, and the scrapes and bruises from my ordeal throbbed painfully.

But the overwhelming emotion was one of triumphant relief.

I took a moment to steady myself, gazing down at the now broken and fragmented latticework.

A shiver ran down my spine.

That could’ve been me, lost in the void of space.

Again.

But it wasn’t.

Somehow, against all odds, I’d succeeded.

A soft chirping sound interrupted my thoughts.

I looked up to see the small creature from earlier, its beady eyes looking at me with what seemed like admiration.

I chuckled. “Looks like you’re my good luck charm.”

With renewed purpose, I set off, the medkits securely tucked under my arm and my little companion hopping beside me.

Jayas was waiting, and I had a promise to keep.

Jayas

The pain was almost blinding, but every twinge reminded me of what was at stake.

Aurora.
