Aurora

The weight of the countdown clock was lifted.

Just one more mating ritual and I could finally escape this twisted game and return to the comfort of my home.

Each step out of my capsule was a step closer to freedom, a step closer to Jayas, and a step closer to finally deciding what lay ahead for us.

I felt the familiar flutter in my stomach, a blend of nerves and excitement.

Jayas had become so much more to me than just a partner in this dangerous game.

With him, I had found unexpected warmth and intimacy amidst the chaos.

As I approached the clearing where Jayas’s pod lay, I mentally prepared myself.

This was it.

The final round.

We’d do what was needed, and then we could leave this nightmare behind.

I imagined us in a different setting, perhaps on his home planet or mine, sipping drinks under a twilight sky, reminiscing about the wild journey we’d embarked on together.

I spotted his muscular figure in the middle of the clearing, his back to me.

He was focused on something at his feet that I couldn’t make out.

The silhouette inside was tall, broad-shouldered… but something was amiss.

Hesitantly, I stepped closer, my heart thumping wildly.

I was about to call out his name when he straightened up.

It wasn’t him.

It was one of the other alien males.

Of course it was.

He was massive, dwarfing Jayas in size.

His skin was a shade of deep violet, shimmering lightly under the bright sun.

I had been so sure — certain — I would find Jayas here that I hadn’t considered it could possibly be another alien male.

After all, this was where Jayasalwaysreset.

At least, he had up until now.

I eased backward, retracing my steps, thankful he hadn’t noticed my approach.

When I finally reached the tree line and leaned my back against it, I let out a deep sigh of relief.

That was close.

I had let expectations lead me astray and they had almost cost me dearly.
