I motioned to the floor of my pod, toward the arena below our feet.

“Eight…”

Then I drew the mountain in the north, and finally, a cross to mark where I believed my pod was located.

Jayas’s eyebrows furrowed as he stared at my makeshift map.

“Seven…”

I groaned internally.

Did his species not have maps?

Was this all foreign to him?

My heart raced as I tried to bridge the gap between our worlds, our understandings.

“Six…”

I pointed at the drawn platform, then at the world below us — our treacherous arena.

I could see his lips move, but no sound reached me.

He was just as desperate, just as confused.

And time was ticking down.

“Five…”

Knocking on the wall of my pod, I pointed again to the cross, my location.

His eyes darted from my drawing to my face and back again, confusion evident.

The countdown voice continued, its tone unchanging and unfeeling.“Four…”

I screamed at him, frustration threatening to bubble over.

He couldn’t hear me, but I hoped the urgency of my plea, the intensity of my gaze, would convey the message.

We were running out of time.

“Three…”

And then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught the sly, predatory gaze of one of the other alien males.

He was staring intently, not at me, but at my hastily drawn map.

The sinister grin that spread across his face sent shivers down my spine.

My stomach sank as I realized the implication of my actions.

Had I just provided him a guide to find me?

“Two…”

All color drained from my face.

The safety and strategy I thought I was establishing had turned into a potential trap.
