Then, in an unexpected turn of events, the alien male called out.

His voice dripped with malicious glee. “Thanks for the idea, Jayas! Let’s see how your precious Aurora fares without her perch!”

And with that, he aimed his weapon upwards.

I felt a sinking feeling in my gut.

The cannon roared, the tree Aurora clung to evaporated, and time seemed to slow.

My heart raced as Aurora plummeted, her eyes wide with fear, her scream echoing hauntingly in the now-deformed forest.

In this deadly game, I had inadvertently given our adversary an advantage, and the weight of that realization bore down on me.

As Aurora descended, the alien male reached out, catching her with ease.

Their proximity was unbearable.

He held her close, his triumphant grin widening even as he kept the menacing cannon trained in my direction.

Every fiber of my being screamed for action.

But I was at a disadvantage, with no weapon and the ground filled with unpredictable pitfalls from the earlier blasts.

Every step had to be calculated, every move precise.

I had to think fast.

I couldn’t let him get away with Aurora, nor could I risk her safety in a direct confrontation.

In that brief moment of distraction, a plan formed in my mind.

The environment, changed though it was, could still be used to my advantage.

The alien male was silent a long moment, only the gentle hum of the plasma cannon alerting me to his presence.

He was waiting, thinking.

Did he think he’d hit me?

That the plasma had burnt me from existence the way it had the tree and boulder?

The flash from the plasma when it fired was bright and in that instant, I had escaped.

So, it was possible he thought I was dead already…

Then the alien male tucked the cannon away, I realized I was right.

He thought I was dead.

It was a misunderstanding I was prepared to take full advantage of.

Aurora

There’s something deeply unsettling about being utterly helpless, especially when ensnared by a creature whose intentions you can only guess at.

As the alien male’s grasp tightened, constricting my chest and making every breath a painful effort, I found myself desperately seeking solace in the familiar.

Across the clearing, Jayas had been my anchor, my constant, in this whirlwind of horror.
