He chuckled darkly, the sound making my skin crawl. “I’ll show you what it truly means to Claim a mate.”
He was speaking to me but I sensed he was really talking to someone else.
Goadingsomeone else.
There was only one being he could be taunting, only one being who would be desperate enough to try and save me.
Jayas.
Realization hit me like a bolt of lightning.
Jayas was here, alive, and close by!
The relief of knowing he wasn’t vaporized was immediately overshadowed by a rising panic.
The beast was playing a dangerous game, trying to lure Jayas out with his threats.
And given the plasma cannon he was now surreptitiously reaching for, it was clear he had the upper hand.
I needed to warn Jayas, to give him some indication of the trap that was being set for him.
But how?
My hands were pinned, my mouth covered, and my every movement watched closely.
My eyes darted around, searching for some way to send a signal.
The beast on top of me released his blade and held it above me, as if about to draw it down, but instead, the creature was using its reflective surface to look behind himself.
The beast’s taunts continued, each word dripping with venom. “You’re all mine now, female.”
It was all an act.
He wasn’t even paying attention to me.
And why should he?
I was a weak female.
At least, that was what he thought…

Desperation flooded me as the beast angled the lethal plasma cannon toward his body.
My heart raced, adrenaline pumping through my veins as I tried to understand his strategy.
But then the horrifying reality set in: once he shifted out of the way, Jayas would be directly in the line of fire.
Jayas would continue to move closer and closer and then the beast would shift out of the way and open fire, this time obliterating Jayas for good.
The beast’s laugh sent cold shivers down my spine.
It was a sound filled with malice, the laugh of someone who knew they were about to win.
I could feel Jayas’s presence.
He was close,so close.
