Every instinct in me screamed to shout out a warning, to do something, anything to change this outcome.

But with the beast’s hand clamped firmly over my mouth, no sound could escape.

The world seemed to slow down as the beast whispered softly. “Just a little closer…”

His words dripped with anticipation, the delight of the hunt clear in his voice.

My mind raced, trying to come up with some form of escape or distraction, anything to change the impending trajectory.

Then, a realization hit me.

The beast had to press the trigger to fire the cannon, and that trigger was right above me.

The plan formed in a split second: all I had to do was apply more pressure on the trigger while the beast was still in the line of fire.

With all the strength and speed I could muster, I reached up, forcing his finger down onto the trigger.

The cannon’s discharge was instantaneous, its hum filling the air before it unleashed its devastating power.

Time seemed to freeze.

The beast’s eyes went wide, a perfect blend of shock and realization.

I felt the heat of the plasma discharge, the energy vibrating through the air.

And then, in a brilliant burst of light, the beast was gone, replaced by nothing but floating blood motes.

Gasping for breath, I looked up to see Jayas, standing just a few feet away.

He looked as shocked as I felt, the remnants of a makeshift weapon — a large, sturdy branch — clutched in his hands.

It was clear he had been ready to charge at the beast, to put his life on the line to save me.

His deep golden eyes locked onto mine, and I could see a whirlwind of emotions swirling within them: relief, shock, and overwhelming love.

In two strides, he was beside me, bending down to pull me into a fierce embrace.

The world around us faded as I buried my face into his chest, his heart beating in rhythm with mine.

Tears streamed down my face, the weight of the ordeal and the immense relief that it was over overwhelming me.

“I thought you were dead,” I choked out between sobs, the words tumbling over one another.

Jayas tightened his hold on me, burying his face into my hair. “I thought I lost you too,” he whispered, his voice raw with emotion.

For a long while, we simply held onto each other, drawing strength from our shared bond.

The horrors we had faced, the odds we had overcome, seemed to only solidify the connection between us.

Pulling back, Jayas cupped my face, his thumbs gently wiping away my tears. “I will always find you, Aurora,” he vowed. “No matter what.”

Tears glistened in his eyes, mirroring the depth of feeling in my own heart. “And I’ll always fight for you,” I whispered back.

In that moment, amidst the wild terrain of an alien planet and the chaos that surrounded us, we found solace in each other’s arms.

The dangers we had faced, the battles we had fought, had only brought us closer together.

And as we stood there, wrapped up in each other, I realized that love truly was the most powerful force in the universe.
