I scanned my surroundings to ensure I had indeed given the alien the slip.

My chest heaved, trying to catch my breath.

I wasn’t sure I could run at that pace for much longer.

Eventually, the beast would have caught me.

I was grateful for the reprieve, even if it was only to last a few minutes.

The quiet serenity was broken by a rustling noise.

My head snapped up and my eyes widened in alarm.

Another alien male, different from the first but equally menacing, emerged from the dense thicket on the opposite side of the clearing.

Our eyes locked.

His gaze was predatory, hungrier eyes, I had never seen.

He took a step forward, and I instinctively took a step back.

This was bad.

Reallybad.

The other alien might still be on my tail, and now I had a new one to deal with.

Without wasting another second, I pivoted and bolted back into the jungle.

Every fiber of my being urged me to run faster, to escape.

The sounds of pursuit grew louder, the alien’s thunderous footsteps echoing through the dense forest.

I dashed behind trees and hopped over roots, shifting direction every five steps to keep my pursuer guessing, but more than anything, I kept track always of the location of the arena’s edge.

I couldn’t afford to lose track of it.

Not while the beasts were on my tail.

But despite my efforts, the distance between us seemed to be closing rapidly.

I needed to think of something, and fast.

A glint of metal up ahead caught my eye.

It was the remains of one of the destroyed pods!

An idea formed.

If I could get there first, perhaps I could use the debris as a makeshift weapon or a barricade.

With renewed vigor, I sprinted towards the wreckage.

Reaching the pod, I frantically searched for anything useful.

My fingers closed around a jagged shard of metal.

Not the best weapon, but it was better than nothing.
