“Our boat?” I asked and looked at Cameron.

Normally, there was a group of people who went on the tour. When I went with my mother it was how we did it. It was actually fun to watch everyone else go up and see their families' reactions.

“I thought it would be better if we had a boat to ourselves,” Cameron said.

“You didn’t want anyone to hear you scream,” I said with a laugh.

“That too,” Cameron admitted and then helped me onto the boat.

Pedro waved at us as we got settled and the crew got the boat underway. It wasn’t a very big boat. It could only hold about six people besides the crew which consisted of the captain and two crew members. There was an awning that covered up a part of the boat but the back was open and had a platform for people to get set up on the parasail.

I sat under the awning to stay out of the sun and Cameron went and sat next to me. There was plenty of room on the boat and I gave him a questioning look when he put his arm behind me and leaned in as we took off from the dock.

“Sue me. I like being close to you. I like looking into your eyes and seeing you smile at me. I really like how the sea breeze mixes with your scent and drives me wild.”

“Cameron,” I said and looked away from him.

“I only speak the truth. Do you want to go up on your own or together?” he asked.

“We could go up together?” I hadn’t done that with my mother. I didn’t even know it was possible.

“Yes, if you like. I think it could be fun.”

“Would it make you feel better if I was there?” I knew he had a fear of heights and why I was surprised that he had suggested we go parasailing.

He didn’t answer me right away. “I want to say yes so you will. I want to spend as much time with you as I can and if we’re up there separately, it cuts into our time. The fact that I will be more comfortable with you by my side is an added bonus.” he said.

“You do know how to flatter a girl,” I replied.

“I just speak the truth. I have actually wanted to try this for a while, I just couldn’t muster up the courage or a reason to do it. You’ve given me both.”

“Excuse me for saying, but I have a hard time thinking that you have trouble working up the courage to do anything.”

“It took me years to work up the courage to tell you how I was feeling. Considering how well that turned out, it gave me the gumption to try something else. What better person to do it with than you?”

“Cameron, I haven’t agreed to anything more than to spend time with you.”

“That’s all I’m asking. If I happen to tell you how much I care about you and how much I want this to work out, that’s on me to do and you to listen or not. You know me, I don’t give up on anything easily. I’m not giving up on us.”

Cameron ran his hand along the back of my arm as he spoke. I looked over at him and he smiled at me. It was a slow smile as if he was telling me he was happy he was there with me. The look wasn’t sexual but it still made me catch my breath. As I looked at him, I was reminded that he was my friend, who had become my lover. He knew me better than any other man I had been with. It made it easier to be with him but also harder for me to resist what I was feeling towards him.

I had thought I could convince myself that we could go back to being friends. I thought the feelings I had for him were just because I was lonely. I told myself it was because I wanted to try something different, I wanted to be spontaneous and I had wanted to be with him. It was all those things but it was so much more. I cared about him and I knew that going forward, no matter what happened between us, there was no changing or going back.

“Hello, Dr. Walker, Ms. Sydney. I am Hector. I’m going to be your safety guide and instructor today. Over there is Captain Steve who will be getting us safely around the water today and this is Lisa, our bartender and all-around helper. If you need anything, please just ask her or any of us. We are here to help you. Now, who is going to go up first?” Hector asked.

“Actually, we were hoping to go up together,” Cameron said.

“Wonderful. So fun. So romantic. Are you newlyweds?” Hector asked and raised his voice slightly at the end of his question.

“Not yet,” Cameron replied.

“Excellent answer, sir. Okay. So let me go over how to get into the harness, our signals, and what to expect,” Hector said.

Captain Steve slowed down the boat so we could hear Hector better as he told us everything we needed to know. He was informative without being boring and was able to make us laugh a few times. In no time, he was done with his briefing and I was getting onto the harness with Cameron next to me.

Hector made sure we were secure and didn’t have any questions and then gave a thumbs up to Captain Steve who sped up the boat. The wind caught the parachute behind us as the line was extended and we took off.

“Oh wow,” Cameron said and squeezed my hand tightly as we took off.
