“Maybe she doesn’t want to share all the details with you,” Cameron suggested and kissed the side of my neck.

I leaned into him and saw Alison and Laura smile at the show of affection. I wasn’t one who normally liked or even allowed it. With Cameron I didn’t mind. I liked having his arms around me. I liked feeling him next to me. I liked how his touch could make my heart race and how his lips felt on my skin. He spent the entire afternoon right next to me. He never left my side and didn’t appear like he wanted to. His hands would either be holding mine or running them along a part of my body.

As the afternoon turned into evening he whispered in my ear, “Care to ditch them and go back to my room?”

We were standing by the swim-up bar at the pool by the beach. His hands were on my hips but as he spoke, he dropped them lower so they were under my bathing suit bottom. No one could see what he was doing but I could definitely feel it. I took in a jagged breath and leaned into him.

“I would love to but I’m going to get my nails done with Laura this afternoon.”

“Can you cancel?”

“That would be mean. I will see you at dinner tonight. We can finally get to the Irish pub.”

“I understand but I expect you to make it up to me later,” Cameron said and kissed my neck. “Multiple times,” he added before he left.

“So, what are you and Cam?” Laura asked when we were seated in our massage chairs getting our pedicure. “You can talk to me freely now that Alison and Cam are gone. What is up? What does this mean? What are you going to do?”

“I haven’t thought that much past it. At first, I thought it was just something we needed to get out of our system. You said it yourself; we had kind of been sniffing around each other for years. Nothing ever happened because one of us was always in a relationship or something. The stars aligned for us this time.”

“Okay, so what does that mean? What do you want from this? What does Cameron want? He hasn’t ever been known for sticking with a woman for any length of time and you don’t do casual. So, which one is it?”

I looked down at the woman who was working on my feet, she seemed to be oblivious to our conversation. I wondered how many random conversations she had overheard and if she was just immune to it all by now. I knew Laura was just worried about me and what I was getting involved in. She knew Cameron almost as well as I did and she didn’t want to see me getting hurt.

“There’s nothing to worry about. I knew exactly who Cameron was when I got involved with him. He might say how this is different, how he wants to be different with me, but I think it’s just the lines he tells every woman. It’s sweet, and we are having fun, a lot of fun, but I can’t see this going any further than the resort.”

“Are you going to tell your parents?”

“There’s no point in worrying them something that isn’t going to last. Even if by some random reason Cameron was into me and wanted to continue this, he knows it can’t. Not with his job, or with mine. It just wouldn’t work.”

“Why not?”

“He’s a surgeon with a promising career. I’m a teacher who works with kids. No one would trust us if they found out we were involved with our stepsibling.”

“I think you underestimate people and what they are willing to accept. You would be fine. I think no one is going to care that your parents are married. I think you’re just using it as an excuse to not get too attached to Cameron.”

“He’s a player. He’s a surgeon. He’s the son of a billionaire and one himself. His world has never been mine and it never will be. Mom was able to fit into all of it because she’s incredible and can do anything. She fit into the rich and famous like she was born into it. I can’t do that. I won’t change who I am so I’ll never fit.”

“Ah, now the real reason comes out. You don’t think you’re good enough for Cameron. Which as I’m sure you know I’m going to say, is completely and total bullshit. He would be lucky to have you in his life. By how he’s looking at you and treating you, I think he feels the same way,” Laura said.

I didn’t answer her and she continued, “You need to decide what you want and where you want your life to go. Cameron is a great guy and if and when he decides to settle down, he will be a great husband and father.”

“You can see him as a father?” I asked.

“He’s a doctor, he’s nurturing by nature. He would be hard but fair, kind but assertive. Just like I imagine he is in bed,” Laura said with a smile

“I’m not discussing my sex life with you, especially when it comes to Cameron.”

“Okay. I probably don’t want to know. But by your smile and blush, I have a feeling it’s the best sex you’ve ever had. Can you at least confirm that for me?”

“Maybe,” I said and blushed harder.

“Good for you. Good for both of you. You have a strong friendship that has been built on years of knowing each other. Now you can build on the great sex and have a relationship. Those are probably the two most important things in a relationship.”

“Sex and friendship?”

“Yes. You need to be able to talk to your partner. You need to like being around them. You two have that. If you have good sex then it moves things up a level from friends to lovers. Sex might fade over time but you need the friendship. Even if the sex isn’t as often you still should be able to fall back on it otherwise, you’re just friends who live in the same house.”

“Like my parents were,” I said.
