“Exactly, and you don’t want that. You’re attracted to him; he’s attracted to you. Okay, your parents are married but that doesn’t mean you two can’t be something. And by hiding behind it or your career or his just shows how much you do care about him and that you do want it to work out.”

“It’s Cameron. What if we try this and then things go bad? It’s not just me I have to worry about but him, our parents, Alison. Everyone. There’s so much more to this than us.”

“Only because you’re letting it. If he was any other man. If he was some other friend you had for years that you were suddenly attracted to; would you be feeling this same way? Or would you be jumping at the chance to be with a man you like being around, are attracted to, and have great sex with. It’s a no brainer as far as I’m concerned. What do I need to do to convince you?”

“I’m not the only one who needs to be convinced. I’m not sure what Cameron really wants.”

“Didn’t he tell you? Didn’t he say he was all in? Hasn’t he given you every indication that he means it?”

I thought about how Cameron had looked at me, how he had been when he was with me, the incredible words that he had said. Laura was right, if it was any other man, I would be jumping for joy. I would be planning a future with him. Could I do that with Cameron? Could I allow myself to be with him and see where this could go? Could I throw my concerns about how it would look for a chance to be with a man that I was starting to fall for?

It would be so easy to say yes, but something was holding me back. I had only started sleeping with Cameron a few days ago. This was all new. I didn’t think we needed or should be figuring out our future so quickly. It all felt more intense, more rushed because of where we were and how long we had known each other.

There was also the knowledge that our parents would be coming to the resort in a few days and that would change everything. I wasn’t sure how they would take us being together. I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to tell them. I was glad I had more time to figure that out. What I really needed to do was have a serious talk with Cameron about everything.

“I just want to say one more thing on the subject and then I’ll drop it. Cameron knows you; he knows you don’t do casual. He knows who your parents are and what it would mean if he slept with you. He might have been loose with other women in the past, but I don’t see him doing that with you. The question is, can you give him the same courtesy?”

There was no need to answer Laura’s question. It was rhetorical and one that I needed to figure out on my own. Luckily, I had a few days to do that and I would take the time to be with Cameron to see what I wanted and to go from there.

With relaxed feet and beautiful polish, I left the salon with Laura. As we got to our hotel rooms, I heard a commotion near the front. We exchanged looks as we walked into the lobby and my mouth dropped open. Standing there being hugged by Alison and Cameron was our parents. I had no idea why or why they had decided to come to the resort early. But as I walked up to them, I locked eyes with Cameron. By the expression on his face, he was thinking the same thing I was.

Whatever we had just started had just come to an abrupt end.

Chapter 17

Cameron

I should have been talking to my father and stepmother and asking them how they were and telling them how excited I was to see them. I should have been asking them about their travels and why they had cut their trip to the other resorts short. I didn’t do any of that. Instead, I looked over at Sydney and tried to gauge what she was thinking.

There hadn’t been any way to warn her of our parents’ arrival and I wished I had. The shocked look on her face told me she had not expected them so soon and didn’t know what to do about it. I didn’t either. Not that there was anything we could do. Now that they were there, it would change things between Sydney and me.

She smiled at her mother and went to give her a hug. I didn’t hear what they were saying but I could feel her both literally and figuratively turning her back to me. I didn’t want that but it was something I would have to deal with later.

“Were the other resorts not to your liking?” I asked my father.

“Not in the least. They were great and exactly what I’m looking to invest in next. We had a productive meeting with the current owners who are looking to sell. They’re going to meet us here in a few days to discuss the terms.”

“That’s wonderful. It’s good to see you. We weren’t expecting you so soon,” I said.

“We could have stayed and had planned on it, but Dawn was missing you all and wanted to get here. You know I can’t deny her anything. I hope you kids weren’t getting into too much trouble,” my dad said.

“Of course not. We aren’t kids anymore. The only trouble we got into was the drinking variety. Now that you’re here, we can continue with it.”

I patted my father affectionately on his shoulder but I looked over at Sydney. She was talking to her mother and Laura but she turned and looked at me. Our eyes held for a second and she gave the slightest shake of her head.

She didn’t need to say anything for me to know exactly what she meant with that look. Whatever we had been doing, was over now, at least as far as she was concerned. I didn’t agree with it but I wouldn’t fight her, at least not at the moment.

“So where’s dinner tonight? I’m starving and looking forward to having some of our chefs' great cuisine,” my dad said.

“We were going to meet up at the Irish Pub in about an hour. We convinced Alison to lift her moratorium on Irish bands. Will that work for you?” I asked and looked over at Dawn and the other women.

“Dear?” my dad asked Dawn.

“You know me, I’m up for whatever,” she said.

“Good. Then we’ll see you all there in about an hour,” my dad said.

I started to walk over to Sydney, I wanted to talk to her and clear things up before it got out of hand. I could see her wanting to pretend like nothing had happened between us but I wasn't going to let her.
