“Why don’t I go with you to your room, help you unpack and we can catch up,” Sydney asked Dawn as I walked towards them.

“That would be wonderful,” Dawn said.

I could do nothing more than watch as Dawn, my father, and Sydney all walked towards their room leaving me standing in the lobby of the hotel. Laura came up and put her head on my shoulder. “She’ll come around. It was just a shock to all of us to see them. She’ll be okay. You’ll see,” she said.

“I hope so,” I replied but I didn’t sound convincing even to my ears.

With nothing else to do, I went back to my room and got ready for dinner. When I walked into the bedroom, I saw Sydney’s cover-up. I hadn’t realized she left it and I had to resist the urge to take it to her room and demand we talk. It wouldn’t do me any good and she was probably with her mother in her room still.

I was the first to arrive for dinner and Laura and Alison soon joined. I could tell they wanted to talk about the change in events but we didn’t get a chance to as our parents and Sydney arrived. She looked incredible in her sundress with spaghetti straps and fitted top. It flowed down to just below her knees. It gave me a gorgeous glimpse of her legs and I was reminded of how they felt and looked when they were wrapped around me.

“Stop ogling Sydney if you don’t want our parents to find out,” Alison said.

“I don’t care if the whole world knows that I’m with Sydney. If I have my way, they will know before we leave this resort.”

“Have you told Sydney that? From how she is or more like how she isn’t looking at you, I would say she doesn’t feel the same way.”

“She’s confused, she’s concerned. I just need some time to convince her she doesn’t need to be any of that,” I said. I didn’t look at Alison but tried to get Sydney to look at me.

“Good luck. If you need me to play interference, let me know. I think Laura would do the same.”

I looked over at Alison and gave her what I hoped was a reassuring smile, “Thanks. It means a lot.”

“Don’t mention it. I want you happy and I think you and Sydney are good together,” she said and then went to grab a seat at the table.

It was good to see my father and stepmother again. We had become a close family and it was nice to catch up with them and hear how their trip went. It had been fun being just the four of us before but our parents fit right in with all of us as if no time had passed. We laughed and drank and enjoyed ourselves.

As the evening wore on, the band came on and Laura pulled Alison and Sydney onto the dance floor. Sydney convinced her mother to join them. I wanted to go out too. Sydney had sat as far away from me as she could and had hardly talked or even acknowledged me all night. It was driving me crazy to be that close to her and not be able to touch her, much less talk to her. I stood up to join them on the dance floor but was stopped by my father putting his hand on my arm.

“Sit and hang with your old man for a second. I want to talk to you about something,” my dad said.

“Sure. Is something wrong? Did the business trip not go as well as you would like?” I asked as I sat back down.

“No. No. That was great. It’ll be a good investment and will help create a good foundation for you kids to retire off of.”

Relieved, I leaned back in my chair and watched the women dance. Actually, the only one I was looking at was Sydney. She looked gorgeous as she danced with everyone else.

“You know we don’t need your money or your help, however we do appreciate it. I’m just happy I get to be here with all of you.”

“Especially Sydney,” my father said.

I sat up and turned to look at him. “What do you mean?”

“Come off it. I’ve known you your entire life. I knew you were going to become a doctor when you were six years old. You may not have, but I could see it. When you get an idea in your head you don’t let it go. You also get a look in your eyes. You have that same look now whenever you look at Sydney. I always thought you had a thing for her, but this is different. What happened or changed between you two?”

I could have tried to deny what my father was saying but he did know me too well and I didn’t want to. I had wanted him to know and I hadn’t been sure how to tell him. Him figuring it out made it easier. I just couldn’t tell by his comment how he felt about it.

“We’re sleeping together. It started a few days ago. It’s good or at least I think it is. She’s a little hesitant about the whole thing.”

“Because of your past? Her mother will tell her all it takes is a good woman to settle a man. She did with me, I could see Sydney doing the same thing with you,” my dad said.

“Would you be okay with us being together?”

“Son, I have wanted you to settle down for a while now. I couldn’t be happier if it was with Syd. She’s an incredible woman and she would be good for you. I think you would be good for her too.”

“I’m in love with her,” I admitted.

Those were words I had never said about a woman. Sure, I loved my father and sister and told them but it was different when I was talking about Sydney. I had thought whenever I said those words it would freak me out, that I would feel trapped or it would feel wrong. It didn’t, it only felt right. It felt as if the feeling had been there for years and was just waiting to come out.
