My stomach drops at the thought, and I realize that the crazy idea that drifted through my head earlier is maybe not so crazy.

Well…it’s still crazy. But I can make it make sense.

To both of us.

And making it make sense to myself is a big deal.

“I can’t believe you built that farm,” I tell him, pivoting in my seat to face him. “That’s just…I don’t even have a good word for it.” I laugh lightly. “Words aren’t really my forte anyway, but that farm is just…” I feel my eyes filling with tears again.

He takes my hand, lacing our fingers together. “It was my pleasure, Abigail.”

“You did it exactly according to my plans.”

“Of course, I did. Why would I change anything?”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were doing it?”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

“You did.” I laugh lightly. “I can’t believe Brady was there. He was one of the guys who…you know.”

Torin nods, his jaw tightening. “I’m aware.”

“You are?”

“I did some digging. I already knew you wanted to start a farm in Shreveport from one of your essays. After you told me about your experience in school, and that one of your classmates was on the city council, I asked around. I very much wanted to be sure he was there to see you shine.”

I swallow hard, studying his face. He means that. He wanted to give me a moment to show Brady what I’m capable of. “He apologized.”

“Good.”

“It didn’t matter.”

“No?” Torin watches me.

“No. I’ve realized that I don’t care what he thinks. I don’t care what very many people think. But—” I swallow again. “I care what you think. And I’m really glad you think my farms are a good idea.”

His eyes are locked on mine, hot and intense. “I think they’re a lot more than simply a good idea.”

I nod. “And I’m glad you think I’m…” I trail off, not sure how to fill that in.

“Amazing. Special. Incredible. Fascinating. Addictive. Pick an adjective, Abigail.” Torin’s voice is low and rough.

I’m breathing faster. “Why did you build the farm? I mean, specifically. Why did you do it here? Now?”

“You’re not really a dozen roses kind of girl,” he says, a grin teasing his lips. “I knew I needed to give you more than that.”

“Why did you need to give me anything at all?”

“Because I want you.”

That makes the air in my lungs whoosh out. I don’t know if he wants me for my farms, or for sex, or what, but…

“Okay, then—” I squeeze his hand. “I have a solution for how we can both get the things we want.”

He leans closer. “I’m listening.”

I take a deep breath. “I think you were right. We should get married.”
