And that the bastard had drugged her.

“Don’t worry, baby. No one is ever going to be able to touch you again. I’ll be right back. Then I’ll take you to your new home.” I eased her down, once again brushing hair from her eyes, the rush of adrenaline remaining. When I stood, I did what I could to control my anger, but I knew I had no chance of being calm again.

Until the fuckers who’d done this were erased from this earth.

“The fucker is still alive,” Ivan said. “And he’s one of them.”

One of them. The suicide killers who were hell bent on destroying me, the men who had a single purpose in their lives.

It was time to turn the tide. The only way to do that was to return to the place where I could control the options.

I headed toward the assassin, standing over him as Jacob brought the flashlight closer.

“Ugly fucker,” he said, chuckling.

“Yeah, he is.” The rage overwhelming, I issued a hard kick to his gut before pulling out my weapon, planting it in both hands. As I lowered my arms, he opened his eyes one last time. “Today is a good day to die.”

I’d saved her, but the damage was already done. Gone were the desires to be a good man for her. Now all I wanted was blood. Revenge.

And I would have it, no matter the depths of where I fell or the consequences it would bring.

However, I’d keep my promise. No one would ever be able to touch her again.

“You’re safe now. No one is going to hurt you. Just wait until the streets are cleared before you head home. Don’t let anyone see you. Can you promise me that?”

“Yes.” I whispered, unable to take my eyes off him. He was beautiful, the aura around him unlike anything I’d ever seen. As if he was glowing. Holy. My mother had taught me there were wolves in sheep’s clothing, but she’d never prepared me for someone like this. I remained in awe as he slowly turned his head, studying me with such darkness in his eyes.

“Good girl.” His voice was still that of a young man, yet the soft velveteen sent trickles of hope down my spine.

Safe.

I couldn’t imagine a world where my mother and I could ever be safe. But I wanted to believe him.

“Why did you save me?” I asked, the words alone almost suffocating.

He seemed surprised by my question, huffing as he rubbed his jaw. “Because you don’t deserve the bad hand you were dealt. Do something good with your life. Get out of here as soon as you can.”

I licked my dry lips, finally nodding. “Thank you.”

“Be careful, little one. Some consider me a true savage but I’m nothing in comparison to the men who bled out on this floor. Never tell anyone I was here, or they’ll consider you my weakness. And they will hurt you terribly.”

I felt a soft breeze blowing against my cheek, but the visions remained, locking me in the sweet relief of dreamscape.

Or was I dreaming?

A soothing sound of waves breaking against a shoreline filtered into my fuzzy mind, a sweet unrecognizable scent pulling at my attention, trying to rouse me from my beautiful slumber.

The images remained furrowing in my mind, the chill of wherever I’d been floating lingering in my muscles.

And his form, tall and muscular, brutal and unforgiving tickled my senses even more, creating a wave of vibrations.

Hero.

The word rumbled in my mind, the visions and sound of his voice fading. No. No! I didn’t want him to go. I was so afraid, unable to catch my breath. “Oh.” My voice echoed, my mind spinning from the wretchedness of terror and…
