“You really think this was a city-wide coverup?”

“I have a feeling there are landing locations throughout the world for the Death Squad, various quadrants where meetings can be held, members housed if necessary. It’s a theory but the sudden arrival of fentanyl in Alaska is out of the ordinary.”

“Except that it’s been proven to be a good area to bring them in from Mexico.”

“Maybe. Or maybe it’s a fundraiser for the Death Squad.”

He grinned. “You’ve always had unusual ideas. I’ll check out everyone involved.”

“What about our buddy Carlos Desposito. Has he turned up?”

“He was definitely in South America. I have no idea who he met with, but he disappeared completely, as if he never existed.”

“He wasn’t supposed to.” That fact likely irritated the hell out of several cartel leaders, including Emmanuel. As I’d always said, there were no such things as coincidences in the world of dark business. If I had to guess, I’d say Emmanuel had something to do with the man’s disappearance. I wondered why he’d risked his life to return to a country he’d once fled from and betrayed. I sensed Ivan’s continued scrutiny of me. He wasn’t used to seeing me reflective over any decision or action. I simply reacted as necessary, almost always in a brutal manner.

“Incidentally, your lovely guest has some interesting thoughts about you and how ruthless you are.”

“Oh, she does?” I was able to grin as I studied his impish expression.

“Yes, she truly thinks you’re a very bad man.”

“Then she would be right.” More so than she even realized. I looked forward to reading her summation of my… talents.

“So Emmanuel is arriving later today?”

I checked my watch, realizing it was already after one in the morning. It had been a long few days, but it was good to be home. With her. It felt as if she was supposed to be in my home. “Late morning.”

“I’ll make certain our soldiers are on their best behavior. I’m surprised you’ve allowed him into your home.”

I studied the man for a few seconds. “You know what they say. It’s best to keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”

“You are very right. I’ll get back to work.” His grin made me laugh. He would soon learn the brutal truth about the secret I’d been keeping.

I pulled the glass to my lips, thinking about how I would handle Emmanuel. This was all about business, yet it still felt uncomfortable as hell. I headed to the set of French doors, throwing them open and allowing the cool salt air into the house. I needed some fresh air, space to think.

As I walked outside, I continued to try to put the pieces together.

Sins of the father.

I’d believed for the majority of my life that meant I’d be required to suffer from the heinous deeds performed by Xavier, his known brutality following him into death. Perhaps I’d given the worthless piece of shit too much credit. He wasn’t the reason I was facing my ultimate demise or destruction of the Santos Empire. I’d become convinced of that.

While Xavier had likened himself to royalty, the truth was that he’d been a little fish in a big pond in comparison to the brutality and accomplishments of Emmanuel Santiago. There was no question of that.

Now all my thoughts, as ugly as they’d become, were driven around the concept that whatever was occurring had everything to do with the South American leader and the secret Dante and I had sworn to keep to our grave.

If that was the case, was it possible others knew of my true heritage? I would have to say yes. That was the only thing out of the mountain of information that made any sense. Now all that was left was than putting the pieces together on why Sabrina had also been targeted.

And the only person possibly capable of doing so? Emmanuel.

Dante’s call had been well received by our… father. Whatever my brother had told him had piqued the merciless man’s attention. Enough so he was arriving in Los Angeles in the morning hours. That mean he knew more than he wanted to let on over the phone.

I continued to have a feeling the Death Squad had been fueled by pieces of information that had leaked, which mean Dante and I had a traitor in our midst.

The thought brought heartburn, enough that even two glasses of whiskey hadn’t been able to erase the anger or the certainty I was right. Why was it that I knew one of the keys to sliding all the pieces of the puzzle together had everything to do with Sabrina?

The lovely woman my cock ached for, the need to ravage her stronger than ever?

It had been easy to watch my sleeping beauty, although the tragedy of what had surrounded both our lives remained in the forefront of my mind. As much as I’d longed to interrupt her sleep, taking her all over again and as much as I’d wanted her scent painting my skin as I’d experienced before, I’d allowed her to rest peacefully in her needed slumber.
