“I’m sorry things didn’t work between you two.”

“No, you aren’t; you never liked her from the start. How you, who has never been in a serious relationship, can spot a disaster waiting to happen better than I can is beyond me.”

“Because I think all of them are disasters,” I confessed with a laugh.

Though when I thought about Victoria, I didn’t think she was a disaster at all, but someone I wanted to get to know. Someone that I felt I could have a future with.

“There’s that,” my father said.

“It still sucks for you, and I’m sorry.”

“Was there something you needed? I’m sure you didn’t call me to hear me complain about my love life.”

“It actually was one of the reasons I called. You remember a few months back when you asked me to help someone get a house, Victoria Johnson?”

“You mean Samantha’s daughter. Yes. Did something happen?”

“In a manner of speaking,” I said slowly.

“I hope nothing happened. I know her mother can be, is, difficult, but Vic has been nothing but kind to me. What happened?”

“Oh, she was great. She just went through the final inspection of her house. I just wish you would have told me who she was.”

“Yeah. I kind of felt bad for doing that, but I figured if you knew who she was related to, you wouldn’t have helped her. Especially when it was such a small sale.”

My father had me there. I couldn’t get overly mad at him because if he hadn’t given Victoria my number, we never would have met. And that was a bigger tragedy than who her mother was. And if I had known who she was related to, I wouldn’t have wanted to meet her.

“Yeah, I would have thought Victoria was just like Sam and never wanted to meet. I was glad to help her out. She’s a wonderful woman.”

“She is. She is. Did something happen between you two? Did you sleep with her?”

I immediately wanted to tell him no. But I couldn't lie to my father. Even if I tried, he would see right through me. “Yes,” I admitted. I didn’t mean for it to come out like a child who had been disciplined by his parent, but I almost felt that way. My father had never interfered with my romantic relationships, and I returned the favor. But this one was different, and we both knew it.

“What were you thinking?” my father practically yelled at me.

“I was thinking she was a smart, funny, sexy woman who was attracted to me. I had no idea who she was until after, when she told me.”

“Are you blaming me for sleeping with a woman you shouldn’t have?” he barked.

“No. I actually want to thank you for introducing us.”

“You aren’t going to see her again, are you?”

It wasn’t a question, even if it came out as such. He was telling me he didn’t want me to. I had never gone against my father, and I had never thought he would be against me dating someone.

“She isn’t her mother; you even said as much,” I said.

“It doesn’t matter. She’s still related to her, and I don’t want you anywhere near Samantha or her family. She could cause problems for you, not Vic, but her mother. I don’t want this to touch you.”

My father was only speaking out of concern for me and was trying to protect me. I might not be a child anymore, but he still loved, cared for me, looked out for me, and always would.

“Actually, Victoria said the same thing. I think she’s trying to protect me too. If things are going south between you and Samantha, she didn’t want me in the middle of it. Or her.”

“Victoria has spent most of her life trying to stay out of the limelight. Kind of like you. I could see her wanting to keep things quiet. And wanting to continue to do that going forward.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“You’re in talks to do your own reality show. If you did it, they would want to meet your girlfriend or any woman you were with. If you were to continue things with Victoria, she might not like the idea of having her face on camera or the added scrutiny of dating a celebrity.”
