Only when she heard fire crackle behind her, the warmth spreading on her skin did she look up. The dumpsters had caught fire with Silas standing by them. He slowly walked towards her. His face had softened, and his eyes had turned blue again.Kneeling next to her, he pushed his arms underneath her shaking body and picked her up.

“You’re safe now.”

His voice was rough and husky, though it had a touch of softness to it. He cradled her to his chest, his arms cool around her.

“Close your eyes, Gwen.”

She did as he asked of her, and right away she felt the air swooshing around her. The wind was so fast that it hurt her skin. Instinctively, she leaned closer to him and buried her face in his chest. He smelled like mint though there was a heavy, stomach-churning iron smell covering it.

The images of him holding the ripped out, bloody organs made her want to throw up again. She tried to pull away, but the wind pressed so hard against her that she couldn’t move. She started shivering not just out of disgust, but because she was freezing.

What felt like an eternity later, the wind calmed down allowing her to move in his arms again. She opened her eyes and gasped. He was walking up to the Seavey mansion. Confused, she looked around wanting to get away from him, but he didn’t loosen his grip.

“It’s okay, Gwen.”

The door opened up and Rayen came storming out. “What the fuck did you do?” He ran closer and looked down at her. “What did you do to her?” His fingertips gently caressed her cheek.

“I kept her safe.”

Silas pushed past his brother and rushed her into the house where Amon was quickly, yet elegantly, coming down the stairs towards them. Silas carried her to the living room and gently sat her on the couch. As soon as his hands were no longer touching her, Rayen grabbed his brother by the throat and pushed him back.

“What the fuck did you do to her?”

“I saved her from being raped.”

Rayen’s jaw dropped, his eyes flickering back to her. “What?”

She flinched as something cold touched her hand. She jerked her head to the side and saw Amon sitting next to her. She’d been so focused on Rayen and Silas that she hadn’t noticed him come closer. He looked awful, his eyes tired with dark rings beneath them. His face softened as he looked at her.

“What happened, Gwendoline?”

A shiver ran down her spine as her name passed his lips. She opened her mouth to speak, but only felt bile come up her throat. Seemingly out of nowhere, Amon handed her a bowl. She took it just in time to spit out the acid.Rayen was by her side in a split second. He held the bowl for her, soothingly running his fingers over her spine.

“Shh… it’s okay.”

She looked up at Silas who was standing in front of her. “You killed them.”

“Of course, I did. They were hurting you.”

Silas made it seem as if it was the most normal thing in the world. He leaned down to her, his eyes determined but soft. With his thumb and index he held her jaw, forcing her to hold his gaze.

“I would kill the whole city if that meant keeping you safe.”

“Gwendoline.” Silas let go of her so she could turn to Amon. “Tell us what happened.”

Hearing her name coming from him somehow felt as if he was caressing her soul. Rayen took the bowl out of her hands and Amon replaced it with a wet towel. She remembered the blood that splattered all over her when Silas ripped that man’s throat out. Her stomach tightened again but this time she was able to hold it down. With shaking hands, she lifted the towel to her face and rubbed herself clean. It was nice and warm, and it was only then that she remembered that she was cold.

“How did I even get here?”

The three of them exchanged a look and Rayen softly took the towel out of her hand replacing it with a dry one. “What do you remember?”

“I was in that alley and Silas was burning…” She paused, unsure of what to say.

“Maybe start from the beginning, little bird,” Rayen said and lifted her hands to her face, reminding her to dry herself off. A warm feeling spread through her heart when he called her ‘little bird’.

“I was walking to the bus stop. I missed my usual one, so I walked to take another. I was pulled into an alley.” A shiver ran down her spine and she had to swallow hard to be able to speak again. “They pulled me to the ground and touched me.” Her voice broke and she stared up at Silas, his eyes just as dark and blue as they were in the alley. “You killed them. You ripped his heart out of his chest.”

“I did.”
