He didn’t lie about it, nor did he seem to have any feelings or emotions about his actions. His coldness scared her. Not because she was afraid of him, but rather his arrogance.

“Why would you do that?”

“Because they were hurting you, Gwen.”

“But that goes beyond self-defense.”

His eyes lit up with amusement as he leaned forward again. His hands held her jawline while his thumbs caressed her lips. “Is that worry for me I hear in your voice? There is no need, Gwen. Even if they wanted to, no one could possibly hold me in a cell.”

His face darkened as it had in the alley, his eyes changing into the deep red, while two fangs pushed past his lower lips.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw Rayen and Amon exchange a look. They both seemed worried, though her eyes stayed glued to Silas’s face. Curiously, she lifted her hand and ran her fingers over his cheekbone. Hesitantly but intrigued she traveled down the side of his nose to his mouth. His fangs were only slightly visible, but sharper than a knife.

She forced herself to take her gaze off him and drop her hand, to look at Amon, and then Rayen. “Are you all…well…?”

“Vampires, yes,” Amon confirmed.

Yet again, another shiver ran down her spine, though it wasn’t out of fear. “They will find the bodies though.”

Silas let her go–which she didn’t particularly like–and stepped back. “No, they won’t and if they do, they won’t recognize them. I burned them.”

He pulled his hand out of the pocket and dropped something white and hard, like pearls on the coffee table. She squirmed when she recognized they weren’t pearls, but rather teeth.

“Neither of them had had any implants,” he said plainly and looked at Amon.

“I puked all over the place!”

“You and every other homeless person on the streets.” He tilted his head slightly. “You don’t need to worry about it, Gwen. Nothing will happen to you.”

“I have their blood all over me.”

Silas’s face changed to regret. “Which you should go and wash off now.”

One second, he was standing right in front of her, the next he was gone, seemingly having vanished into thin air. She looked around but couldn’t see him anywhere.

“I think he went upstairs to warm up your shower,” Rayen said softly. “Can you walk or would you rather I carry you upstairs?”

“I think I can walk.”

He nodded and took the towel out of her hands before helping her onto her feet. They felt gummy, as if someone had taken all her bones out and replaced them with Jell-O. Rayen stayed by her side as she slowly made her way to the stairs, while Amon walked behind them.

“I should go see where it happened.”

“Amon, trust Silas, he knows what he’s doing.”

“He wasn’t thinking straight.”

“He can hear you,” Silas growled from above the stairs. Staring down at them, he watched Gwen carefully as she slowly, but surely, climbed her way up the stairs.

Rayen pointed to a door to her left. “That way, little bird.”

A warm shiver ran down her spine again. She liked that name, enjoyed hearing it. They walked her into a massive bedroom with a king-sized bed, a sitting nook, and a large desk to her right. To her left she heard water running. She followed the sound into a floor to ceiling granite bathroom with a large bathtub and a glass, walk-in shower.

“We can also run you a bath if you prefer that.” Rayen gently guided her to the bathtub so she could sit on its rim.

“No.”

“Silas put some clothes and towels right over there. If you need us, call for us, but take your time, okay?” He caressed her cheek and smiled down at her before turning to Silas. His face hardened slightly. “You’re not staying in here. Get out before Amon and I drag you out.”
