“Do you still enjoy that power?”

He didn’t hesitate to answer, “In a different way.”

She narrowed her eyebrows, “You think humans are lesser than yourself.” She didn’t need to hear his answer. “What about me?”

“You are everything but beneath me.”

“But you call me little bird.”

“Out of different reasons.”

She knew that, though now his pet name had a bitter taste to it. It felt as if he was belittling her, seeing her as a tiny, pathetic creature. He circled his thumb over her hand, soothing her emotions. She sighed and slightly relaxed as she let him calm her.

“So, you’re not with me because you… well… you are stronger than I am?”

A genuine, adoring smile spread on his face, radiating through his eyes. “No. I would kneel before you in a heartbeat.”

“None of us think you are lesser than us, Gwendoline.”

She turned to Amon, who was still sitting by the desk. “I know, I just…”

“You’re our queen and we’ll treat you as such,” Silas reassured her.

“Until I’m old and rusty,” she laughed and laid back down, letting Silas and Rayen cuddle her.

“Even when you are old and rusty,” Rayen chuckled amused.

She yawned and closed her eyes. Pictures of her as a wrinkly old lady haunted her dreams. She kept waking up, and then was soothed back to sleep by Rayen and Silas. Though they asked what was on her mind more than once, she didn’t want to share it. This was something that had bothered her since they’d revealed their age to her. Even though she’d pushed it deep down and locked it in a drawer, this would become an issue very soon.

Just as her dreams calmed down, her alarm clock went off. With a sigh, she rubbed her eyes and sat up. Amon was sitting at the desk, looking over a stack of papers while Rayen stood behind him, looking over his shoulder. Silas sat next to her with a book in his hands, which wasn’t a romance book. He set it aside and leaned in to kiss her cheek.

“You can still lay back down and take the day off, you know?”

“I wish it were that easy,” she sighed.

She wanted to let them take care of her so badly but the survival instincts she’d adapted over the years just couldn’t let her do that. She was too afraid that something could go wrong, and the idea of losing everything again paralyzed her ability to trust them to take care of her.

Rayen turned around. “Will you eat the same as yesterday for breakfast?”

She nodded and he disappeared into thin air.

Amon watched her closely as she climbed out of bed and walked to her room. She wanted to kiss or at least hug him, but knew he wasn’t ready. Only if he made the first move would she seek out such intimacy. Silas walked behind her, placing his hand on her neck like he’d done before. It wasn’t restricting nor diminishing, rather a sweet touch.

“May I choose your clothes for the day?”

She nodded with a smile.

“How formal do you have to dress?”

“Slightly less than what Amon used to expect.”

While she walked to the bathroom Silas went to the closet. After a few minutes he handed her a blue dress, that looked summery, though still formal enough to be worn in the office.

“I like that one.”

She quickly got dressed and met Amon at the bottom of the stairs. Rayen quickly approached with her breakfast and a goodbye kiss.

Before she could leave, Silas pulled her into his arms. “Don’t stay away for too long or I might have to come and drag you back home.”
