He ran his thumb over the back of her hand. “I do hope you like it.”

“It’s time with you, so I’ll take all I can.”

He slowed down in front of a cozy little bookstore. “We have it all to ourselves tonight.”

“You’re kidding right?”

He shook his head, seemingly pleased with her reaction. “I thought we could find a few books to read together.”

He opened the store, and she stepped inside only for her excitement to rise even more. The store was cast in a dim light, with candles all over and a small table with finger foods and wine to the side. She turned to wrap her arms around Silas’s neck as she pressed a kiss to his lips before turning back to the romantic paradise he’d created.

“This is gorgeous.”

“We can stay as long as we like, and you can grab whatever book interests you.” He walked over to the table and filled a glass and handed it to her with one of the sandwiches.

“I don’t even know where to start.”

“You like romance, so maybe over there,” he chuckled.

“But you like history so the next book we read should be in that genre.”

He looked around searching for something before nodding into the back right corner. “Maybe a mix of both?”

She followed his lead and took a bite of her sandwich. Sipping on her wine she looked through the historic romance section. Every time she found a book cover she liked, she let Silas read the synopsis to her. When she liked it, he started reading the first page and if that piqued their interest, they added it to the books to take.

She’d never been with a man that shared her love for books. Being with Silas felt easy, nothing compared to just a few weeks ago. No matter what book she pulled out, history, romance or not he read it without judging. He kept refilling her wine and always made sure she had food in her hand.

After a while she turned to the pile of books they’d collected. Silent guilt swept through her, or so she thought.

“What is it?” Silas asked worriedly.

“I didn’t notice how many I picked.”

“I would’ve thought you’d pick more.” Tilting his head, his face turned serious. “You’ll never worry about money ever again. Erase those thoughts from your mind because you’re now well taken care of no matter your needs.”

She sighed. “You say that but it’s not that easy.”

“It is Gwen. You’re safe in all regards.”

She laid her arm around his waist and leaned against him. “It feels like a dream, too good to be true. You know when life is going good you just know something bad is about to happen?”

“Whatever bad tries to get to you, I will destroy.”

She knew he was speaking the truth. He’d done so before, and there was no doubt he would do it again. Not wanting to ruin the mood even more she looked around the store.

“Do you see any books you like?”

“I added a few already.”

“You did? When?”

He chuckled. “I’m much faster than you, remember?”

“Yes, but you were next to me all the time, weren’t you?”

He shrugged his shoulders and walked to the cashier’s deck where he grabbed two bags and packed up the books. “The owner said we can come back at any time, so even if you don’t like any of the books, we can choose new ones.”

“Should I write a list of all the ones we’re taking?”
