He nodded towards a piece of paper on the desk. She leaned closer and saw a completed list off all they had chosen.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to your speed.”

Grabbing one last bite of food, she followed Silas out onto the street and to the car. To her surprise, it was already dark out. She hadn’t even noticed the time fly by so fast. On their way home, Gwen dozed off, exhausted but happily holding on to Silas’s hand.

Twenty-Three

Amon

Amon had been slightly disappointed when Silas let him know he would take Gwendoline out for the evening. It wasn’t that he was jealous, but he cherished having her near. Not needing to be downtown working while waiting on Gwendoline, he’d returned home early. Silas had been busy preparing his evening with Gwendoline, while Rayen had gone out to meet their contact for their blood supplies. Now he was sitting in his office staring at the paper stacks in front of him waiting for their little bird to return to the nest.

“Don’t know what to do with yourself?” Rayen laughed as he walked into the office and sat down. “I feel the same though. I didn’t even know how fucking boring our life was till she showed up.”

“She has changed us quite a bit.”

Rayen laughed again. “You don’t even know how much. She really needs you Amon and you clearly need her in your life. Not just as a pretty doll to look at but someone who you can love.”

Amon sighed and looked out the window into the darkening evening. Rayen was right, there was no denying it. Her words from the evening before had stuck with him and he couldn’t help but see Marianna smile up at him and urging him to feel love again.

A scene of Marianna and Gwendoline sitting together over tea painted itself in his mind. They were laughing, Marinna telling Gwendoline who he was before he got turned and then Gwendoline telling Marianna about who he’d become. Marianna’s face turned sad as she learned about how he’d treated Gwendoline. Before his own heart could sadden her eyes lit back up as Gwendoline spoke of her new life with him, Silas, and Rayen. Marianna seemed relieved that he hadn’t only found Gwendoline but also two dearest friends.

The scene faded again as he heard a car come down the driveway. Other than the engine and a faint heartbeat it was quiet. Rayen got up and Amon followed him out the office and to the front door. They watched as Silas picked Gwendoline into his arms and gently carried her towards the house.

“I can walk,” she mumbled, well on her way to being asleep.

Silas responded with a chuckle and tightened his grip on her.

“I see you tuckered our little bird out.”

“He took me to a bookstore,” she beamed up at Rayen who leaned over her and gave her a quick kiss.

“I know, sleepy bird.”

She smiled and leaned closer into Silas’s chest. Amon followed Silas up to Gwen’s room where he quickly grabbed her shirt and pants for the night. He watched patiently as Silas helped her out of her clothes and handed her the ones he had in his hands.

“Thank you.”

“Will you be going to work tomorrow?” Amon asked, wanting to know if he could look forward to another ride with her.

Her eyes looked up at him with a hopeful expression on her face before a yawn wiped it away. “Will you drive me?”

“Of course.”

She nodded and cuddled up in bed.

With his heart longing for her touch, and the images of her and Marinna in his head he took a deep breath and asked, “May I lay with you?”

Her eyes opened wide in surprise, but she quickly hid her emotions as if she was afraid she would overwhelm him.

“Always,” she whispered.

Rayen came in and set a new bottle of water on the nightstand. With a loving expression he leaned down to Gwendoline and kissed her forehead.

“Sleep tight.”

Before stepping out he nudged Silas to go with him, who–reluctantly–followed him.
